Compelling and heart-wrenching
By L. Tutor
Readers will likely come down sharply with two opinions of this book: They'll either love it or they'll hate it, no middle ground.

The story is a complex one and starts out along the familiar lines of the common-girl-falls-in-love-with-prince theme. He leaves her; she gets pregnant. Years later, Tariq decides to purge Jessa from his system with one more night so that he can finally move on with his life....

We've been there before, certainly.

However, Caitlin Crews takes a bold step by adding a very real-life atmosphere to this story: adoption. She (and her editor) are to be commended for adding an element that's rarely broached in these stories. Sure, it comes up. Many a hero and heroine are shown to be scarred products of adoptions and neglectful adoptive parents gone bad. (That's something I've always found hackneyed and distasteful, by the way.)

Readers who think they'd be turned off by the idea of a heroine opting for adoption -- as opposed to struggling and likely failing to raise a child by herself -- should give this book a shot. It's well written, has some lovely imagery and is extremely thoughtful in the way it was put together.

In this story, we see two extremely complex and well-rounded characters. Frankly, this story has a lot more depth than Presents books usually offer. There is plenty of romance, certainly, but there is an emotional element that really grabs you and, if anything, makes the premise of their love story stronger in the end. We understand the anguish and pain Jessa went through to make her decision. As she tells Tariq, and we watch his reactions and subsequent actions, your heart goes out to both of them.

This story doesn't end neatly or tritely, but it will leave you with a warm feeling. Like most of us, Tariq and Jessa had to earn their "happily ever after" and that nothing should be taken for granted.

crude elements
By Karen Clarke
I see every reviewer sees different elements and this book really spins it. I found Tariq's crude suggestions to the shocked Jessa offensive and it ruined the tone of the story. The 'night' that he thinks he's entitled to to gratify his horny itch so he can get on with marrying a virgin for the throne is not romance and neither was his arrogance in believing he's fully entitled to bonk Jessa all over the place and everything is hunky dory.

So it ruined the despair Jessa went thru with the birth , subsequent depression and the adoption. Hard call but I think the ungrateful lucky sister that gets the adorable baby needs a good bitch slap - she's horrible.

If you can get past the badly proposed sex, this is a strongly developed story. If like me, you don't enjoy crudely proposed sex and flimsy minded h, there are other great stories to invest your time and money in.

'Hate it' category
By Zia
I don't read Harlequin Presents books for their realism factor. I read them for the pure unadulterated fantasy factor. [SPOILER ALERT - SPOILERS AHEAD...] But what I really hated about this book, wasn't that the heroine felt she had to give up her son to be adopted & sad as it was, that he stayed adopted. It was that her sister!, selfishly does so (adopts). Selfish because... why didn't the sister have Jessa move in, with her son, until she got on her feet? Why didn't she help support & help Jessa instead of taking her son? I find that sick & beyond selfish! Since the premise is that the boy is fine where he is and although not rich, isn't wanting for anything, obviously money wasn't the factor in this sick scenario (can't afford to feed another mouth & a half for a while, etc.). It's not like Jessa didn't want or love her child. So what if the sister couldn't have kids? She should have helped Jessa, not take her son! And although the author wrote Jessa as so unselfish as to want what is best for Jeremy, she didn't convince me - why didn't Jessa ask for help from her family instead of giving up her son?

And more..., again selfishly, she (sister) doesn't think of what is best for her adopted son (Jeremy) either. We are not talking about another every day couple being the biological parents. We are talking about a king & his future queen. Jeremy could have gone to live with LOVING biological parents and become heir to a kingdom! What a selfish (adoptive) mother! And 'this' is the best thing for the boy? At the very least, the adoptive parents should have been willing to move to (forget name of country) and be near the biological parents to allow Jeremy to have his inheritance - that's! unselfish parenting. What about when Jeremy grows up and realizes that not only is he adopted, but his 'aunt' is his biological mother and his father is a king? That he lost out at being a King himself? That he lost out on knowing and living with his future "full-blooded" siblings? What happens when he learns that after he's grown up as an only child, he HAS brothers/sisters? Few would be happy with those circumstances if we are speaking of realism. Obviously I had a real problem with the sister and could not see how she made for the best mother since she only thought of herself & her own pain and not Jeremy's future well-being. Money may not be everything, but we aren't talking about money 'instead' of love. We are talking about love with money as a side bonus. Jessa's sister steals her nephew and his inheritance and his future siblings - all in the name of love. How romantic. NOT! As far as the romance between the hero & the heroine, it was nice. But I didn't think it was anything to write home about. Probably because I was too grossed out by the sister and the circumstances behind the adoption & that the biological parents didn't even try to fight for their son or at least be a bigger part of his life. How is Jeremy going to feel about that? Nope, didn't like this story at all.
