its tone was not dark like so many books targeted at a young adult audience

This was a wholesome, well-written, engaging, coming of age story. Though the subject was serious, its tone was not dark like so many books targeted at a young adult audience. I am considerably beyond that age group and thoroughly enjoyed the book!

Insight into struggles of a teen and the rewards of belonging to a team

A teen starts getting letters from his dad, a soldier who was killed seven years earlier in Afghanistan. This novel follows the boy through struggles at school and at home, aided by guidance from his late father. This is a five-star book that will keep you turning the pages. It will especially be appreciated by football fans. While there is a great deal of detail about football plays, you don't have to be a sports fan to appreciate the bonding, camaraderie and sense of belonging that being part of a team can bring, whether in high school or the military. This is aptly portrayed in this coming-of-age story.

Everything you do, matters.

I want to say up front, some people are going to be disappointed by this book, because they are going to measure it by volume, not by content. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT by Andy Andrews can be read cover to cover in fifteen minutes, but I have read 1,000 page tomes that did not contain a fraction of the message and meaning of this tiny book.

If you have seen Andy's DVD, The Seven Decisions, this is the same message Andy presents regarding the butterfly effect, specifically where he talks about the actions of Col. Chamberlin and Norman Borlaug. These are both incredible stories everyone should hear. I have used both of these stories to close training meetings and they are always met with tremendous emotion.

I want to take just a moment to place my own little spin on the butterfly effect. Things happen for a reason. God has a Divine plan that is beyond our comprehension. Have you ever known exactly where you were going but for some reason took a wrong turn? You've made this same journey 1,000 times but for some reason today, you weren't paying attention and turned left instead of right. What were you thinking?

Some people might slough this off as nothing, but I don't believe that. What if you had turned right as you always do? Perhaps by turning left, you avoided an accident and in that accident a young girl might have been injured or killed. Whose to say that young girl might have one day given birth to the person who someday cures cancer? By making a wrong turn, that tragedy was avoided.

Now Andy's message here is much more deliberate and is more centered on the importance of every action we take, or don't, but the concept is the same. Actions matter. Actions make a difference and sometimes a much greater difference than we will ever be aware of. The 2 minute conversation you have the annoying neighbor kid may be of greater importance than the speech you give in front of a room full of people.

Actions matter. If you want to under that concept better, read this little book.

How small decisions grow into life-changing events...

Andy Andrews' book The Butterfly Effect: How Your Life Matters is one of those small gift books that will take you about 10 minutes to read (if that), but that has an interesting message that will tweak your viewpoint on life. You've likely heard of the "butterfly effect", where it's said that the beating of a butterfly's wings can stir air modules that will stir other air modules, until you end up with a hurricane in China. While taking that scenario literally might be hard to accept, the underlying truth is valid... a small action taken at one point in time can ripple out and have enormous implications.

Andrews tells the story of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a college professor who was also a colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. At the battle of Gettysburg, he was told that he had to hold the end of a 80,000 troop line strung out across miles. His platoon repelled a number of Confederate attacks, but attrition took its toll and they were without ammo (as well as most of the soldiers they started with). As the Confederate soldiers reformed for what would be the final attack, Chamberlain found out that all his commanding officers had been killed, and if he failed to hold the line, the Union Army would likely have to surrender or face mass slaughter. Faced with the choice of doing nothing or doing something, he ordered his ragtag band of soldiers to fix bayonets and charge. The Confederates, shocked at seeing an offensive being launched at them, figured the Union side must have been reinforced, and started to retreat. In short order, they ended up surrendering to Chamberlain, and he carried out his orders to hold the line.

Andrews then plays the "what if" scenarios out... what if Chamberlain had given up? Experts predict that if the Battle of Gettysburg had been lost, the Confederates would have won the war. America would have looked like Europe with a number of smaller, fragmented countries. America would not have existed to help stop the tyrants of World War 2 from overrunning Asia and Europe. And so on, and so on. All from the decision of one man standing on a brick wall, giving the order to charge in the face of overwhelming odds.

While you can make the argument that Andrews is looking only at the positive side of things, I think the fact remains that many small decisions can and do reverberate over time and have far-reaching effects. And if we live with that understanding and purpose in mind as Andrews suggests, our lives can take on a new sense of meaning and purpose.

If you've read other Andrews books in the past, you might have already heard this story (specifically, his book The Noticer). And if you're looking for something of substance to explore this idea further, The Butterfly Effect isn't it (it's only 109 pages and literally should take you no more than 10 minutes to read). But in terms of material for you to contemplate and implement into your life, The Butterfly Effect does deliver.

I love to flip through gift books so I jumped at the chance to review another book for Thomas Nelson Publishers. The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews is a small, hardcover, coffee table style book with the reminder that every person, living, passed on, or yet to be born, has value. It's an interesting short story about the ripple effects of our actions. The author uses historical events to illustrate the fact that every life is meaningful, and often in ways that each person may never know in their lifetime. The fact that life matters and that no action, seemingly large or small, goes unnoticed by the universe is the recurring theme.
There are two quotes that I found particularly moving:
"Every single thing you do matters. You have been created as one of a kind. You have been created in order to make a difference. You have within you the power to change the world."
Who wouldn't feel inspired by that, right?

About the Author
"Gary K. Griffith" is President of Griffith Training, a productivity and quality consulting firm in Huntington Beach, California. Griffith conducts in-plant and public training courses and seminars on various engineering and quality related topics. He is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, and a Fellow of the Institute for Advancement of Engineering (IAE).

During his 35 years of experience, Griffith has held a variety of manufacturing and quality positions, including inspection, inspection supervision, process control engineer/supervisor, quality engineer, quality manager, and process engineering manager. He has also taught courses in quality, engineering, mechanical design, and machine tool technology at El Camino College in Hawthorne, California. He is a firm believer in quality practices and the promotion of quality awareness in order to improve the status of American businesses.

Expert author, strong book for any level professional

I had the fortune of being trained by Mr. Griffith in GD&T 10 years ago as a rookie designer. He certainly opened my eyes to the reality of translating the page to the real world. He was very,very well versed in the topics of GD&T and inspection. Years later I found myself in QA and a member of ASQ and find out that he has written (and been writing) "the book" on technical quality skills. This book is not weighted toward metric improvement, SS, or cultural quality topics though it includes those. Its the book you want handy when its time to discuss how to measure something properly which is the fundamental business of quality professionals. It is well-organized, easy to read though you should have some experience before diving in. I recommend this book to all levels as the topics within it are "core" skills. In fact though I am a CQE, I tend to grab this book first when needing a reference for day-to-day tactical issues.

Amazing book. I have been in the quality department ...

Amazing book. I have been in the quality department for a couple years and am always looking for resources to sharpen my skills. This book covers alot. The chapter on surface plate inspection was what peaked my interest initially in the book description. Despite it being such an integral cornerstone in manufacturing in the United States, there is not much good info online about it. This has fulfilled my expectations on the subject and everything else that was advertised. I'm still diving in, so I don't have alot of feedback yet.

The only negative that comes to mind immediately is black and white photos. A few of them are a little tough to make out. Nothing major. If you have a job in the quality world and you are looking to expand your skill set, buy this book.

20 years later-no new cognitive distortions have been found

It probably sounds somewhat dramatic, but I can only recall two self-help books that had a drastic effect on my life-by giving me a reasonable relief from anxiety and depression. The first one, Mind over Mood, by Greenberger and the second one, Feeling Good Workbook by Dr. Burns. Both of these books are based on solid research, reason and practicality.

Almost 20 years since his workbook, Dr. Burns has finally written another book. To my disappointment and relief, it looks like he has nothing major to report. The good news is that after all these years of cognitive therapy evolution, there are still only 10 types of cognitive distortions. The bad news is that it takes only 10 to manage a perfect job to make you miserable.

Cognitive therapy is based on the premise that our own automatic and often unnoticed thoughts WITHIN us, not the events that happen TO US, scare us to death which in turn create a warped reality providing fertile soil for depression, anxiety, self-doubt, loneliness, and procrastination. Virtually everyone who is depressed or anxious is at mercy of these distorted thoughts. To get a relief, each distorted thought must be noticed and dealt with. As you can't relieve your hunger by just reading a cookbook, you must apply it to your own situation for at least 15 minutes a day 5 days a week. Once learned and practiced, the technique will offer you resilience to life's day-to-day challenges, unlike the antidepressants where the relief exists only while you take them.

Burns lists various applications to become aware, challenge and rewire your thought pattern and beliefs about yourself and the world. There is no magic, no parent-blaming, just common sense stuff dealing with the here-and-now.

What is so valuable here is his clear writing, convincing arguments, along with the examples of application that anyone can find an immediate use.

What sets this book apart from other self-help books is that it's packaged into a system one can use in a consistent way. Moreover, the improvements one feels can actually be measured with various tests that Burns provides. Once I saw it worked after many years of doom and suffering, I refocused and dared to feel hopeful. This added to my feeling good.

If I were to find faults with this book, I'd say this: in all honesty, there really was no need for this book at all. True, in this book he struggles to find some new ways to tackle problems to justify the new edition, and true, there is some fine-tuning of the previous methods, however, non-essential ones. In my opinion, Feeling Good Workbook is so effective, it has all you'll ever need, which is enough to make a substantial change.

In the end, each Burn's book can stand on its own, and will do a perfect job to diminish panic, depression and anxiety.

Even though the system sounds simplistic, its power lies in consistency of application-easier said than done for the depressed and unmotivated-but it does become easier if you find it within yourself to stick with it.

If this is pretty much the same book as the one written 20 years ago, why am I giving it 5 stars? It's very simple: If you are a person whose life has been robbed of feeling good for decades, any of Dr. Burns' books = be it this one or the ones published 20 years ago-offers a real tool for change. And this fact alone, deserves all the stars in the skies.

An Outstanding book not just for FEELING BETTER, but GETTING BETTER!

Dr. Burns incorporates the last 25 years of research and clinical developments since writing the best-seller FEELING GOOD (strongly recommended as well.) He has written a book which markedly refines and elaborates on FEELING GOOD, rendering the Cognitive Therapy approach found in FEELING GOOD even more effective for quick and long-term relief from distressing emotional conditions, including depression, anxiety, anger, and low-self esteem.

In case you don't know, the book FEELING GOOD has been clinically proven to relieve major depression JUST FROM READING IT and following its instructions. I am confident that a clinical trial on WHEN PANIC ATTACKS would yield similar results for individuals suffering from anxiety disorders. The new book is very readable and far more versatile, and addresses some of the implicit gaps left from the former book.

WHEN PANIC ATTACKS easily stands on its own, and doesn't just address panic attacks, but rather every conceivable type of anxiety, including chronic worrying, phobias, agoraphobia, shyness, public speaking anxiety, writer's block, procrastination, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Body Dysmorphic Disorder. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Burns should win a Nobel Prize for what he has accomplished here. Beginning with the "Daily Mood Log" --a sophisticated yet elegantly simple worksheet for documenting and combating one's emotional pain-- he has developed a veritable "technology" for overcoming even the most disabling of human emotions.

Why do we suffer? We suffer because we hold onto some core self-defeating beliefs (SDB's) that leave us rather vulnerable to painful mood swings. Accordingly, he identifies 23 common SDB's. Many of these SDB's (such as Achievement Addiction, Approval Addiction, Fear of Rejection, Conflict Phobia, and Emotophobia) are far more widespread than even the common cold! All of our emotional suffering can be traced back to the SDB's that are always there, lurking somewhat hidden beneath our suffering, until we take the courageous and pro-active step to identify and revise them. He then provides 40 ways to "untwist" your thinking, divided into 15 types of methods. Because Thoreau was correct when he said, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation," I think it would be a tragedy to limit this book to those with mental health diagnoses. A life saving book

As someone who struggled with panic attacks for over 25 years, I have read a lot of books about anxiety. I now plan to get rid of all of the others! I read Dr. Burns' Feeling Good at my lowest point last year and it was a lifeline for me. That book focuses more on depression, and while some of the information in it applied to anxiety, I kept wishing he would write a book specifically on anxiety. This book has advice and exercises for every type of anxiety. Whether you have job performance anxiety, social anxiety, fear of riding in elevators or having blood drawn, the tools you need to overcome your fears are in here.

The key is--and Dr. Burns reinforces this point--you have to do the exercises in order to feel better. This means actually writing your answers on paper. It also means, in many cases, facing your fears. His methods combine exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. His words are warm and humorous, and you will feel supported as you break down barriers you may have built up for years.

Dr. Burns has improved my life immeasurably. I, and all of my loved ones who have had to suffer along with me for so many years, are grateful! Buy this book and try the exercises.
