I love this book-- Every kid I know who read the book -now- wash their hands without being told to do so. And they have not -- had the flu this year. A great cold-virus preventer!

Not for preschoolers!

The book has a long, complicated story that does very little to excite kids into wanting to clean their hands. Most of the story has nothing to do with washing hands. The cover illustrations lead me to believe a song would be practiced in the book in order to intrigue children who like music. Not so - a song is only mentioned. The illustrations in the book are confusing to my 5 year olds because the names stay the same, but the nationality of the characters and their features change.

The "binding" is a cheap plastic spiral that broke after about 6 months of normal use. The pages bind up when paging through the book and the huge spiral binding, about 3 inches in diameter, constantly twists out of position. The book weighs a ton and generally is useless unless laid out flat; the design of the book is rather thoughtless since its not practical for field use at all. Buy another handbook if you need interpretation of the code, otherwise, use the standard softcover code book and refer to other illustrative sources.

Excellent Resource

Ever wonder what gage and type of wire you need for a 20A current draw on a motor? Or how many 16 gage wires you can fit into a 4 x 6 junction box? Or what breaker size you need for an electrical panel? Or?... [insert hundreds of other electrical questions]. If so, this book is probably for you.

Having worked with a LOT of standards, I have say the NEC code book has got it's act together. This is the defacto standard for anyone who needs to work with electricity or design electrical appliances. The best part of this standard is that it clearly states the code rule and the goes on to give rationale and examples.

As an engineer that works on a variety of electro-mechanical equipment, the in-depth explanations presented in this standard are really appreciated. In my opinion, a good working knowledge of this standard is a must for most engineers and tradesmen who work around electricity. Most devices have their own standards but the NEC is simply referenced everywhere and some local jurisdictions lean heavily on it so it's always good to be familiar with it.

It's always important to keep the most up to date version of the standard and for this reason I recommend this version. For me, the in-depth topic of SCCR (short circuit current rating) was worth the update.

Ronald L. Taylor, Ed.D. is currently professor of Exceptional Student Education at Florida Atlantic University. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Psychology at Austin College and Trinity University. He received his doctorate in Special Education from the University of Houston. Prior to coming to Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Taylor was a school psychologist and consulting teacher for a Title III grant that focused on working with culturally diverse students. He also served on the faculty in Special Education at Boston University. Dr. Taylor has published extensively, including 8 books (18 counting various editions) and over 20 chapters and 90 articles. He is currently completing the eighth edition of his assessment text, Assessment of Exceptional Students: Educational and Psychological Procedures. He has received over 2 million dollars in grant funding. He is active in several professional organizations, having made over 60 presentations, and was editor of Diagnostique, the journal for the assessment division of the Council for Exceptional Children.

About the Author

Robert Schleif is a professor in the department of biology at the Johns Hopkins University and the co-author of Practical Methods in Molecular Biology. He has been the recipient of a Helen Hay Whitney Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Harvard University and an NIH Career Development Award. His current research utilizes genetics, physiology, and recombinant DNA technology to study the mechanism of regulation of the E. coli L-arabinose operon.

I am currently taking Dr. Schleif's Molecular Biology course at Johns Hopkins, and this book is our text. It is an excellent book, and an invaluable resource. I plan on using this text for years to come throughout my research career - anyone planning a career in the biological sciences or just interested in the subject should get a copy and read through it - it is very readable, yet contains an enormous amount of information and insight into scientific methods used today.

Powerful read, meaningful read

I studying this book in one of my college classes and I fell in love with it. It's so emotional, intense, and angry. It's visceral and real. I think everyone who wants to better themselves and combat the racism in our society and in themselves should read this book and learn about Anzaldua's life. Any marginalized person is going to connect with something in the text, and anyone of privilege is going to gain some new perspective. Since, in someway, we are all marginalized and privileged it means there is so, so much to learn.

The text itself is also incredibly beautiful and evocative. It is not always a joy to read, no, sometimes it's too painful for that. But it is a powerful read, a meaningful read.

Required reading for everyone interested in race/gender/culture

I cannot recommend this work enough. It is very rare that you come across a book that will shake the very foundations of the way that you see the world. This book has done that for me. It is at once, life affirming, challenging, and encouraging. Read it and soak it in. I had to put it down several times to just let her ideas wash over me. Buy it, read it, and tell your friends about it.

I don't know why it's taken me so long to read this book

This book changed my life. I think Anzaldua should be assigned reading for any Hispanic populated area because it invites one into the realm of academia with a language that speaks to our culture and gives understanding to the borders that comprise our selves. She creates a language that is not limited to the mixed nature of hybridity or "mestiza" of race, but any group that finds themselves at the borders of 2 or more races, classes, sexes, genders...and so on.

Gravitas is a no-nonsense book - an easy read - that helps to channel your thinking as to why you have a voice and how you want to be considered. Anyone - a teacher, public speaker, an assistant rising to manager who needs to be taken more seriously in meetings, a salesperson who wants to win in a pitch, an interviewee, a mom who wants more oomph with her kids - would be advised to tuck into this book.

When reading Gravitas, I kept thinking, why am I on MY Path, what can I do to further myself with my Poise and Voice, how can I convert negative thoughts into positive, cool and calming seniority that brings people towards me rather than pushing them away?

I know in my mind how I want to come across, but gravitas is needed to convince others especially when under/over confident. This book showed me how - not just at work but in the smallest things in my personal life too - to be more convincing and less emotional.

I was first made aware of Caroline Goyder when I read her piece on CNN entitled, "What ancient Romans can teach you about leadership." I was immediately drawn in by her words and assigned the book to my team as part of our leadership reading series. It was by far one of our favorite books. You can tell that Caroline knows her craft and is a great teacher and writer. She introduces the reader to some fairly sophisticated topics in concise and easily digestible pieces. I will continue to use this book as a reference while building my own personal as well as professional brand. The best thing about Gravitas is that anyone can pick it up, read her wisdom and apply immediately. If you feel stuck and want to recharge your brand, then Gravitas is a must read.

I was so delighted to see Caroline has put her "genius" in a book and share the tremendous work she does. Gravitas is a must-read for anyone who wants to up their communication skills. With her usual clarity, she outlines the steps for developing your skills as a speaker and amplifying and enhancing your innate presence and gravitas. We all have it. You just need someone like Caroline to show you how to access it. I know the value of Caroline's work first hand because she took me from someone who couldn't stand up and speak in front of others to where I am now...a member of the National Speakers Association and constantly speaking to small and large audiences. Her book is a fine investment.
