Beautiful, Intellectual, a surprising find

I had to leave a review because the rest weren't really fair. I mean in all honestly when I started this book I too thought it was boring. But never one to not finish a book I kept reading. How glad I am to have. The story is intricate. It weaves in and out of the secret love of two past writers and two modern day individuals who discover this love through the literary work they left behind. The book references many poems that paints the imagination and taps into emotions that make up for the sometime wordy details. I appreciated the beautiful love that develops between the lead male and female. This is a type of book that fills your mind, not a romance you'd expect, but definitely in a good way. Brilliant writing, brilliant fleshing of characters. A very intelligently delicious book--once you get past the slow beginning.

I really tried. I came here to Amazon to see if I was the only one who struggled with this book. I wasn't. The effort finally became too much and I am giving up after reading about a third of this book. Life is too short

If you want only 1 book about goal setting: buy this book

"The Magic Lamp" is a very good book to learn how to define your goals, how to do something every day towards your goals, and how to manage your progress.

Things I learned from it:

- the 11 steps to define your goal; I especially like step #7 (Begin your goals with "I choose...") and step #8 (Make it emotional)

- the 7 steps to create an action plan

- to focus on one or maximum two goals at a time

- to schedule a weekly progress report to manage the progress of your goals

- the 30-day plan to create a new habit

- the preference question (e.g. What is more important to me right now? Eat that chocolate cake or loose weight?)

- the FAQ-section at the back of the book

- how to finish what you start

The style of this book is also very different from the success boys like Robbins, Tracy, etc. who promise that you'll double your income, be more successful, blah, blah by setting goals.

If you want only 1 book about goal setting: buy this book. However, I think it is good to compare it with a more traditional goal setting book to appreciate "The Magic Lamp" even more. (e.g. buy also Brian Tracy's book or audio book "Eat That Frog")

Excellent guide to getting more out of life

I've read lots of books on self-help, setting goals, time-management, etc. So I'm often reluctant to read more, feeling that I've learned most of what's our there.

'The Magic Lamp,' however, is an excellent read for anyone who wants to get more out of life. It's a wonderful combination of fresh insights and time-tested wisdom and common sense.

And true to the book's promise, Mr. Ellis does help the reader foster a perspective from which setting goals is not a chore, but rather a pleasure.

'The Magic Lamp' also contains a lengthy, priceless appendix that lists other recommended books. Highly recommended.

Rehashing of every other self help book and very drawn out

The author has a method for painstakingly drawing out every step of writing a goal. At first I thought this was good because it makes it easy for people who don't know what to do, but after a while it seemed silly. The worst part if that it's supposed to four steps to make a goal, but then within each step there are many steps. The way the book is set up is also confusing, because there will be "LAMP process 1" and then 1 chapter expaining that process, 3 chapters that are about something else, and then the next LAMP process. Why couldn't they just lay out the LAMP process without a bunch of fluff in between? The author is almost obsessive compulsive in his little "steps." For example, here are the steps to his "first things first" priniciple:

Step 1. Figure out the most important thing for you to be doing right now.
Step 2. Do it.

And his formula for solving problems:
Step 1: Decide what problem you want to solve.
Step 2: Choose the solution.
Step 3: Take action to implement your solution.

Wow. If I would have known it was that easy, I would solved all of my problems in life by now.

When I wrote out my 10 most important wishes and rated them in importance, I figured out that my most important wish is something that is going to take years, while getting a job isn't isn't as "important" to me, it's certainly the one that needs to be done first. Later on, the author tells us that we can pick and choose which one to work on first (then why did we have to go through that whole long rating process??). He also says we can only work on one goal at a time! I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem right to me.

So after following his instructions, I broke my goal of getting a job into very small steps and wrote them into my planner. Unfortunately, you can write out a million steps but if you are going about it the wrong way, it's not going to help. It was much more helpful to me to just read a book about getting a job, rather than planning all these steps to get a job.

One thing I did like about the book was his discussion of positive thinking and affirmations. But of course, this information is only in 1,000 other self help books. I was already implementing it in my life, so it was nice to read it but not very helpful. I also liked his discussion of growth and going out of your comfort zone. He talks about how we have the power to make choices and decide our own fate, and that "wishing works, if you do." Agreed, but wishing is the same as writing a goal, and I sure wish I would have just bought a book about writing goals. Maybe it wouldn't be filled with all these useless "steps" and lists and brainstorming exercises. I don't think pursuing your goals should take up your ENTIRE life.

Special-warfare devotees will find this to their liking: an insider's account of the Navy's amphibious commandos known as SEALS, by one of the group's most controversial veterans, along with Weisman (coauthor of Shadow Warrior ). Marcinko describes his combat adventures in Southeast Asia in the '60s; his command of SEAL Team Six, one of the most effective counterterrorist outfits in the world, in the '70s; and his pioneering leadership in the '80s of Red Cell, a unit designed to test the Navy's vulnerability to terrorists. Super-macho in outlook and behavior, Marcinko delights in recalling the traditionally gross behavior of the SEALS as well as his own unique experiences such as eating the brains of a live monkey to impress his Cambodian allies. An autobiography of a career naval officer who dropped out of high school, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and spent his ca reer struggling to win acceptance for special warfare SEAL (sea-air-land) units within the Navy establishment from the late 1950s to the present. Marcinko provides detailed descriptions of the early transformation of underwater demolition teams (UDT) into SEAL units. With interesting vignettes about training and actual missions during the Vietnam War, he gives a close-up view of this specialized and little-known brand of warfare. Marcinko's participation in the Iran hostage rescue attempt in 1980 and the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983 provide a perspective vastly different from the accepted versions of these events. However, the overuse of salty language throughout the book that lends new meaning to the phrase "curse like a sailor" and Marcinko's polemical accounts of his struggles to win acceptance for specialized warfare within the Navy are unfortunate. The stormy career of a top Navy SEAL hotspur. Commander Marcinko, USN Ret., recently served time at Petersburg Federal Prison for conspiracy to defraud the Navy by overcharging for specialized equipment--the result, he says, of telling off too many admirals. It seems that his ornery and joyous aggression, nurtured by a Czech grandfather in a flinty Pennsylvania mining town, has brought him to grief in peace and to brilliance in war. Serving his first tour in Vietnam in 1966 as an enlisted SEAL expert in underwater demolition, Marcinko returned for a second tour as an officer leading a commando squad he had trained. Here, his accounts of riverine warfare--creeping underwater to Vietcong boats and slipping over their gunwales; raiding VC island strongholds in the South China Sea; steaming up to the Cambodian border to tempt the VC across and being overrun- -are galvanic, detailed, and told with a true craftsman's love. What did he think of the Vietcong? ``The bastards--they were good.'' His battle philosophy? ``...kill my enemy before he has a chance to kill me....Never did I give Charlie an even break.'' After the aborted desert rescue of US hostages in the Tehran embassy, Marcinko was ordered to create SEAL Team Six--a counterterrorist unit with worldwide maritime responsibilities. In 1983, the unit was deployed to Beirut to test the security of the US embassy there. Easily evading the embassy security detail, sleeping Lebanese guards, and the Marines, the SEALs planted enough fake bombs to level the building. When Marcinko spoke to ``a senior American official'' about the problem, the SEAL's blunt security advice was rejected, particularly in respect to car-bomb attacks. not as good as it was when conceived

Very interesting story of the struggles of one very determined warrior. He had to fight the establishment most of his life and after creating Seal Team Six, he had no opportunity to lead them into actual battle. Seal Team Six is what it is today, however, not as good as it was when conceived, but still the most effective special ops unit in the world. On several occasions he was asked to test the security of different military bases and after demonstrating that the bases had little if any security, he was severely criticized for doing such a good job. The base commanders and the admirals in charged were very embarrassed by him demonstrating how bad the situation was. He even went aboard a couple nuclear submarines and set dummy bombs on the reactors. He and his men were able to go about any where they wanted to go on the bases without causing much concern. In one of his escapades in (Red Cell) he actually went into the office of the CNO and went through his files . He and his Seals were really sneaky. Great reading.

Tough Hombre

I am sure the author deserves all the accolades, and has earned all the medals of a distinguished career. This guy is John Wayne multiplied by 10, very full of himself, as he describes how he challenged one and all, that did not meet his high standard of training and demeanor. I found it interesting enough, but because of the nature of the way in which he talks about his life, and how he put in their place even Green Berets, as if compared to his outfit, there were of lesser impact, I grew a little skeptical as I read along. That he is tough there is no doubt, that he is larger than life, either. Rogue Warrior by Richard Marcinko is a wild ride, from a highly decorated and respected american warrior. To that extent this seal conveys the certainty that he would be the right fighter to have around in a serious fight. 3.5 Stars.

This is a review for Rogue Warrior, not Red Cell.

The best non-fiction war book out there today about the Navy S.E.A.L.'s and how Seal Team SIX was created. This is the auto-biography of Richard Marcinko and how the U.S. Navy tasked him with creating the world's best counter terrorist team. He does talk a lot about his Vietnam days as a SEAL and how he operated and came up with the idea for SEAL TEAM SIX, even though the Navy only had 2 SEAL Teams at the time.

A qualified mechanical engineering designer, Keith Lee has been actively involved in drag racing for 20 years. From being an impressed young spectator at the Drag Festivals, he went on to compete on one of the more unusual machines, before spending many years as a writer and photographer working for various national and international publications – most notably, as drag strip correspondent for Motor Cycle Weekly. Keith was also a commentator at Santa Pod Raceway for ten years, and served on the committee of the main organizing club of the period, the BDR&HRA. He now works as a professional photographer.

DRAG BIKE RACING IN BRITAIN

I have DRAG RACED MOTORCYCLES IN THE USA for many years and have met a few racers from around the world over the years. Many times we have laughed at their ideas and creations. But they work ! As we look at roughly 60 years of DRAGBIKES IN THE USA and laugh at how far we've come, now we can look at BRITAIN and how far they have come. We can appreciate how hard these RACERS work to over come lack of parts and suppliers. Not always perfect weather conditions and tracks not always up to USA
conditions or standards. Over all I like the booked. Good pictures and stories. Like meeting some OLD FRIENDS and some NEW FRIENDS and reminiscing over their family photo albums.

Definitely for beginners

Consulting for Dummies follows the Dummies formula - broad but not deep. I bought this book without really checking it out, and it ended up not containing the information I was interested in (financial and legal aspects of running a consulting business)
What this book does have is good information on ethics, pricing, marketing yourself, and writing a brochure to describe what you do.
If you're completely new to running your own business or consulting (maybe on the side), this would be a great book to pick up.

A Guide for Beginners

Consulting for Dummies by Bob Nelson and Peter Economy International Data Group Books Worldwide, Inc. 1997
Consulting for Dummies is a practical guide for anyone considering the field of consulting for either part time or full time employment. The book is written in a clear, understandable format and is interspersed with interviews with actual consultants to give a first hand view of what goes on in the life of a consultant. A wide range of consulting experiences is addressed - from individuals who operate alone, to larger consulting firms.
The book is divided into five main parts, each one prefaced by a 5th Wave cartoon. Part One is: "What's a Consultant". This section not only defines what a consultant is, but has the reader analyze his/her own situation by way of quizzes, assessments and considerations as to whether or not consulting would be an appropriate field to venture into. After going through this section, the reader will know if s/he has what it takes or even still wants to be a consultant.
Part Two, "The Consulting Process", addresses the basic steps that are involved when taking on a consulting project - from writing proposals, collecting and analyzing data, and developing, presenting and implementing recommendations. The authors go through these areas in a practical, applicable format while at the same time reminding the reader to really develop the relationships with clients in order to best meet their needs. While the first two parts of the book go over basic considerations, the third section, "Key Consulting Skills", delves into some underlying abilities and personal practices that affect the consultant and his/her effectiveness. Personal image, ethics, organization and communication skills are some of the areas touched on. Again, the advice given is practical and specific.
Parts Four and Five, "Setting Up Your Business" and "Marketing Your Business" get into the promotion of, bookkeeping tips and other business aspects of a consultant's career. I read "Consulting for Dummies", by Bob Nelson and Peter Economy, cc1997 Book Worldwide, Inc. This is definitely an introduction to consulting book. I found that it was easy to read, as well as enjoyable. I would like to cover the authors' credentials, the book itself, and what I found most valuable about the book. To begin with, Bob Nelson of Nelson Motivation, Inc. has published 17 different business and management books. He has a master's degree in business administration and has been in the forefront of the media, regarding business and marketing. His co-author Peter Economy is currently a freelance business writer and a business consultant. He has published two other books, including, "Managing for Dummies", and has published other written articles as well. He has over 15 years of management experience and is currently pursing his MBA. Together these tow authors create a book that can be read and comprehended by anyone. If you're planning to enter the consulting arena I would recommend this be the first book you acquire. The book begins by seeing if an individual is cut out to be a consultant. Once it is decided that being a consultant is for you, then you can move on to anyone of the books 28 chapters. The highlights include the following. Why consult, what consultants do, choosing the right route and making the transition to consulting are what comprise the first section of the book. These items are very useful in showing the reader the path to success. This first part will find out what you are good at, and how to expound upon that. The second phase of the book walks you through the consulting process. This includes defining the problem, what kinds of data are available and what to do with it. It also covers problem solving and developing and making recommendations. This is the heart of the book! The authors do a fantastic job of laying out the material and breaking it down in layman terms. Part three of the book is what I would call the lungs of the book, not as important as the heart, but still vitally to overall success. This part includes things like image, communication, how to do successful reports and how to make technology work to your benefit. This will help guide you once you have the basics. Once you have read, and reread the first three parts, then you can move on to setting up and marketing your consulting business. These two areas are covered quite extensively. This is where you will learn how to generate and sustain business, set up your fees and build your business, also this part will show you how to negotiate a contract as well. The last part of the book is called the "part of tens". This is several chapters with ten ideas in each, for example, ten tips for negotiating a great contract, or the ten biggest mistakes a consultant can make. While all of these book was worth reading several ideas were the most important for my needs. I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter on whether or not to have a home based office or not. It was something I had considered but I didn't see the cons before reading this chapter. While I am still planning to work at home, I am aware of some pitfalls to avoid. I also enjoyed the chapter on tracking time and money. The book even gave me an activity log that I plan to incorporate into my daily practice. I enjoyed the set up of this book. While this may seem a minute point, to me it is not. The layout, with the table of contents helped me find everything I needed without a lot of wasted time. I also loved the fact that the authors used several different icons to denote things that were extra important, or pitfalls to avoid. This book, written by very knowledgeable authors contains quite a bit of information. I pointed out some parts that were helpful for me. While everyone's' needs of this book maybe be different, I firmly believe everyone needs this book.

Accounting concepts and alternative approaches

There are not many accounting books that deal with the conceptual aspects of accounting and that show alternative approaches.

These days, in a global world, accounting standards (namely US GAAPP and IASB) convergence is at hand but depending upon the way you describe the divergences you may frighten the reader or be overly optimistic. That is why I beleive it is important to go back to the basic reasoning that led to such or such standard.

This book will contribute to enhance unbiassed accounting theory and help the reader make his own opinion.

It's a textbook....say what you will regarding the entertainment value but the content is good. Excellent theory content for masters or professional accountants seeking continuing education.

Not suitable for undergraduate students who are not advanced or unwilling to put in the time and effort to comprehend the material.

Dense Read; WONDERFUL Information

I wish that every parent in the US would sit down and read this book from cover to cover before they endure another sleepless night or futile tantrum or trying day with their children. It is a wealth of sound thinking, common sense, and streamlined techniques for building a family based on love, respect, and confidence rather than the chaos, doubt, and frustration that seem to be the norm in modern parenthood. If you're looking for a book on parenting, read this one!

For content, I would give this book six stars if I could. Many other reviewers have pointed out the title. I agree that it's a little misleading. Though a great deal of the book is dedicated to describing manipulative behavior and explaining why it is seriously bad for a child to learn manipulative techniques instead of more honest and straightforward coping mechanisms, the book is, at its root, a book about the following:

Gentle parenting within firm limits -- NOT punishing, rather teaching and guiding your children and giving them what they need to thrive

Value-based parenting -- not in the modern politician catch-phrase sense (don't the same politicians who pervert the phrase for their own votes always seem to have a few mistresses or prostitutes going?) but REAL values like honesty and responsibility and consideration,how to use your values to be consistent, fair, and raise kids of integrity

Raising happy, healthy, productive kids -- if you build appropriate limits and give a strong foundation of love, support, authority, and consistency, then your children will thrive

Using "Stop, Pause, Redirect" and other streamlined techniques -- not a quick fix, rather a graceful method for changing your child's problem behavior that you should use consistently for the duration of your parenthood

On all of this, the authors are completely correct. I have worked with kids since I was twelve. I was a camp counselor, a babysitter, a coach, a tutor, and a teacher. I have worked with hundreds of children from birth to 18 years, and I will tell you that I have never observed a REAL problem child whose parents used tactics like those outlined in this book. A child of difficult temperament? Sure, that's luck of the draw, but a child of serious character flaw, behavioral problem, or other dysfunction? Never.

Unfortunately, the parents who most need this book are the ones least likely to read it, because they are permissive and do not want to play the role of authority figure in their family. There is no way such a parent would pick up a book of this title, except as a last resort, but I will tell you, I have seen a lot of parents mess up their children by being permissive (I see it everywhere!), and a few terrible parents mess up their children by being cruel (which is awful to see!), but no parents mess up their kids by being firm, authoritative, loving, and consistent, and that's what this book is about. So if you're thinking, "I don't think this book sounds gentle or nurturing or emotionally intuitive enough for OUR family. Sounds pretty harsh to me." Then you are exactly the person who needs this book. I can say it on the internet in a way I can not say it to my friends: you are doing your child, yourself, and your entire community a disservice if you don't know how to set limits and stick to them as a parent. This book will help teach you how to do that in a loving and meaningful way.

So why only four stars? Because I'm a nitpicker. This book suffers from "great thinker, poor writer" complex. It's common in the sciences (my field, too!). The book's editors did not improve the writing style adequately.

Though not particularly long, The Manipulative Child is a very dense read. I had to read this book with my reading aide (a card with a hole in it that limits my view of the page to a few lines). Otherwise, I found myself entirely lost in the page. It took a long time to get through, because I had to re-read many paragraphs to absorb them (though I am, admittedly, not a strong reader). The book needs a brutal round of editing for clarity. Much of the vocabulary is inherently confusing (e.g. "negative reinforcement" having entirely different technical and lay definitions). It needs to be pared down and ironed out.

But the same could be said for my review! Apologies for that! ;)

This book's target audience is parents of children from 2 through high school, but it would be useful to anyone (babysitters, aunts and uncles, grandparents, daycare providers, teachers) who works with kids. I read it when my daughter was 1, and though she's a little young to respond to SPD, the exercises in the book have helped me to lay out what kind of a parent I want to be and have prepared me for the toddler years and beyond.

To sum this up: I highly recommend this book for anyone who works with kids. Especially anyone who feels out of control of their child's behavior and doesn't know how to turn it around. But even better to read it so early that you never get to that desperate point!

Not for the Weak or Close Minded Mentors

Where to begin?! My head is spinning with the amount of information and introspection this book provides. If you enjoy the payoffs of getting to the root of issues, this book is for you. The payoffs are sometimes right there and simple to achieve and some may require more persistence. If you prefer a life with little growth, confrontation and self awareness then keep watching tv, eating drive-thru fast food and most of all, forget this book.

Nothing worth while is ever easy, but the work done to get great results shows you that you're strong enough to stick it through. When you crack this book open, its a bit like opening Pandora's Box. You will find that each member of the family plays into the behavior we're trying to stop (avoid). If you can't take a bit of self-criticism, you'll miss valuable clues into the drama at hand. The book is not direct in the sense that it openly says 'parents are idiots and do everything wrong', but speaks to us in a gentler way by describing how our being manipulated serves something within ourselves as well.

So, as much as we would like to focus on the child (which this book does), we also need to run a parallel thought process on the hand -we- play.

There are 'assignments' provided which invite you to delve deeper and become better at identifying what you've just learned. It also provides clear information to resolving manipulation behavior and its fallout.

Its refreshing to read a book with such emphasis on self responsibility and integrity. I'm so happy I ordered this book, I think lessons learned will bleed over into other aspects of my life and allow me to improve at parenting and myself! Time to stand up and be the parents our children need us to be!
