It's a brilliant analysis of how things work in the real world and the promise of new technologies. Markets fully explained

Financial Institutions and Markets by Meir Kohn is, in my estimation, an astonishing compilation that describes everything relative to the marketplace, from banking to debt markets and to equity markets.

The inside liner note states the book is intended for use alongside an undergraduate or master's course in finance. But I, being of neither, purchased the book as a stand-alone. I am pleased with my decision to buy the book and have found it is well organized and easy to read. Only on rare occasion did I find any mathematical rigor (calculating coupon payments and so on). Nearly all of the book, however, is plain text that explains the markets.

Some highlights include: four ways that businesses raise capital for investment, what commercial paper is and what it has to do with money market funds, what swaps are and how they are used, mortgage strips, stock exchanges, call auctions, the role of market makers, and many more.

The book is quite lengthy. I initially skipped the banking, debt, and insurance chapters and went right to the section that described the stock market. Having satisfied that, I am now backfilling the rest of the book and have been content if not surprised with the directness and clarity the author has provided on all subjects.

I am halfway through the book. It is life changing. These precious truths about confessing God's Word are timeless. I grew up in a Word of Faith home and I learned these truths and have even operated in them for most of my life. This book is a great reminder or an introduction that we have what we say according to Mark 11:23. Throughout the Bible, we see this truth time and time again. Proclaiming the Word of God daily can only help the believer. I dare anyone to read this book and apply it immediately. You will see results because God's Word works. If you believe and obey Mark 11:22-25, you will see the power of it in your life. This is serious business. I know many people preach against confession or the Word of Faith camp but God's Word is God's Word and it doesn't matter who doesn't believe it. I learn from many different camps including the Reformed Camp. I understand that not one camp/group has all the light in the Bible. If we would stick to the Bible and pray and trust the leading of the Holy Spirit then we will walk into the light.

Everything in Christianity is depended on faith. We got saved through faith in the finished work of the cross and we go to heaven by that same faith. We pray in faith and we live by faith. There are many dimensions of the Christian faith. Dr. Price describes the faith to get our needs met both physically and financially. Examine the scriptures in this book and apply them and you will see the results. The key is consistency. Obeying the Word of God will only result in the blessings of the Lord.

The One and Only Standard

During his lifetime Antonio Stradivari made approximately 1,100 instruments, primarily violins. Herbert Goodkind photographed 700 of those, the rest presumed lost to history. Each instrument is photographed front, back, and profile. Some also have detail photos of the scroll and f-holes. Interestingly included are a few guitars which the master made.
The photograph section is preceded by a short history of Stradivari and his instuments in history. These essays reveal the historical discourse on violins and give perspective to the modern violin historian. It is amazing to me that such a work was ever undertaken to begin with and stunning that it was actually completed. It is a 780 page tome with a copyright of 1972 complete with long abandoned paper quality, even for its time a rarity, and beautifully embossed cover sheets front and back. An amazing piece of work and the world standard.

I find this book to be an excellent prayer book for all stages on one's faith journey. It can be adapted for group prayer or contemplated on an individual basis. It makes a wonderful gift to give or receive.

Wonderful prayers to get you started...

I discovered this book on retreat at St. Ignatius Retreat House on Long Island, NY, and when I have the courage and faith to sit down with it and read a prayer or two, I am always filled with the Spirit. Great to keep in your briefcase or on your nightstand--you can use the healing power of prayer anywhere.

Learning from the Jesuits

As a junior at a Jesuit High School, the adminstration gave me this book as a gift for leading the upcoming freshman retreat. I had already fallen in love with the Jesuit spirituality, but this book sealed the deal. For Lent, I promised myself I would read one prayer each morning, and I have, and enjoyed it. It makes everyday worthwhile. As the Jesuits believe, we choose each day to make a journey towards or away from God. This book helps make that journey. Ad Mejorem Dei Gloriam.
