One of Wilson's most engaging researches..

Having read quite some books written by C.Wilson, i know that going through the ones where he's conducting research is always a great experience.

"The Occult" is famed for being probably the premiere book on its subject: the history of magic, its definitions, the paranormal, the limits of human powers and the analysis of the "hidden powers" humans possess, certain forays into specific areas (like clairvoyance, means to achieve it, etc.) , loads of examples from throughout history on people who've influenced this field, as well as a comprehensive review of views that prevail over all these areas.

This is without the slightest doubt a gripping book. Even if you have only a surface interest on all this, Wilson has a way of pulling totally into the matter, absorbing you and letting you get to the very depths of it.

But if you happen to actually care about this field -and it's indeed a field where imagination can really gallop wild- then this book is quintessential to start from.

The market is saturated with books that deal with the "occult" or specific areas of it, but before you should even bother with any of these you should start here. Alone the vast list of sources that will be introduced to you is enough to make the book nothing else than a treasure.

But its main asset is that Wilson approaches the subject with his usual hardcore seriousness and efficiency, and lets remember, this is a topic where charlatanism is often the rule. But it's the scientific approach that puts C.Wilson ahead of the pack. The gathering of evidence through exhaustive reading of anything regarding the issue, the evaluation of it, the personal analysis as well as that of others, the comparisons thereof, the analytical history of the subject.

I find it hard to believe that one would read this and emerge the same person. Close to impossible I would say.

Believing that this book researches the very probable future of human evolution, an evolution that might be very much nearer than most of us think and which has tremendous implications about what we could become, i think the "Occult" is an absolute must.

I listed down over 20 books for immediate reading after this one, books that i found reported in it. Not to mention that i found interest in areas that i hadnt suspected as being as intriguing as Wilson revealed them to be.

If you decide to buy this book be warned that it's a hefty 800 page volume, but be also informed that it's the fastest 800 pages you'll ever read as the author is one of the most easy to comprehend researchers i've read. An unbiased investigation

Colin Wilsons investigations into arcane matters span over several decades of his life. I don't believe this is the best of his works, but it's the best survey of the history of the occult in his library of contributions. A reader seeking an honest examination of best available facts and history probably won't find a better place to begin than with this one.
I believe Poltergeist is probably his best, but the range of investigation is far narrower.

Walking with gods

I first came across the thoughts of Colin Wilson in one of his novels, 'The Philosopher's Stone', where the hero - let's call him Will Colinson - relates:

'I developed remarkable powers as an algorist - a lowly branch of mathematics concerned with devising methods for solving problems.'

Mr Wilson considers himself an authority on mathematics, so you might think that something sensible is being said here. In fact it is a category mistake, like saying that bars are a lowly branch of music. If he can do this in a subject I know something about, it makes me think twice about trusting his judgment in areas where I know less. For not only is he an authority on mathematics and science, he is also an authority on philosophy, criminology, history and the paranormal.

This book is a long, discursive account of magic and magicians from the Stone Age to the 20th century, written in a souffle-like style which many readers find agreeable. Anyone who ever claimed to do magic is in, and some get in who never claimed to. If you would walk with the gods this is the easy route, but watch out for the boggy patches. On almost every page there are odd misconceptions delivered ex cathedra. The French Revolution was caused by Marie Antoinette's shopping sprees which bankrupted the French state. Numa, a legendary king of early Rome, was 'Emperor' when Roman territory was about ten miles across. The Spanish Armadillo was a better swimmer than the Great Seal - no, he doesn't say that but I suspect he would if he'd read '1066 and All That'. Call it nit-picking, but this rings alarm bells for me. He is a sort of intellectual magpie: a person of very wide reading with no discernible critical sense, least of all in relation to himself. Maybe that helps when you walk with the gods.

If you're confident of spotting all the howlers and discounting them, you may be able to find some firm ground here. The author is industrious; there is a lot of information and it's possible that some of it is not too inaccurate. It's even possible that one or two of his notions are worth a moment's consideration. The problem is deciding which.

John Ulrich Giesy's series of novels detailing the adventures of Jason Croft on the planet Palos. Jason projects his mind, and travels the astral plane to the planet Palos in search for the woman he senses across the void. She is literally his soul-mate, and he discovers a suitable body to inhabit when the former resident gives into despair and takes leave of it. As he uses the body to physically interact with the people and animals of the planet, he uses his astral projection to function in the physical world about him.
Jason Croft appears in the three stories in this book, which were written contemporary with Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter novels. It's a fair speculation to say Jason Croft is likely informed by Burroughs, though Giesy makes of his character and surrounding world something unique and quite intriguing.

About the Author
Sergio Aragon�s is said to be the fastest cartoonist in the world today. He is certainly the most honored, having won every major award in the field, including the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award, and the Will Eisner Hall of Fame Award. He was born in 1937 in Castellon, Spain but his family soon relocated to Mexico during the Spanish Civil War. In Mexico, Sergio studyied Architecture at the University of Mexico, and learned pantomime under the direction of Alexandro Jodorowsky. Sergio's first contribution -- "A Mad Look at the U.S. Space Effort" -- appeared in Mad #76, cover-dated January of 1963. For that same issue, he also contributed the cover gag (the first of many) and his first "Marginal Thinking" cartoons to be printed in the magazine's margins. He has since appeared in every issue of Mad except for one (the post office screwed up) and has done thousands of his unique pantomime cartoons. He also produced 16 best-selling original Mad paperback books. Sergio teamed with wordsmith Mark Evanier to bring forth the adventures of Groo the Wanderer. Groo quickly became one of the longest-running "creator-owned" comic book properties, outlasting many of the companies that published it. Sergio and Mark have also produced other comics, including Fanboy, Boogeyman, Magnor, Blair Witch? and an acclaimed series in which together, they trash famous characters: Sergio Aragon�s Massacres Marvel, Sergio Aragon�s Destroys DC, and Sergio Aragon�s Stomps Star Wars. For their comic book work, they have received multiple Eisner awards. Sergio has also "soloed" with two all-pantomime series, Actions Speak and Louder Than Words and on his new comic from Bongo, Sergio Aragon�s Funnies. The author lives in Ojai, California.

For fans of Groo, not necessarily Conan.

I'm not gonna say I regret this purchase but I certainly don't recommend it, either. I was a bit surprised at how much of it took place in the "real world" telling the story of Sergio and Mark. I would say this is probably more for Groo fans than Conan fans and unfortunately I am the opposite.

Everything I expected and then some

Funny, witty, stupid... All of the above? Read it wih an open mind because this is more Groo than Conan. Well, maybe a bit of MAD thrown in there. The book was expensive for the size (thanks Dark Horse...), but was an amusing read while it lasted.

Stars and review for the book only. Amazon sent me the book with a significant bend in the cover.. So in the case of service subtract two stars.

BAD, BAD COMIC !!! ...terrible

Groo versus Conan was terrible. Too much time was spent yakking about getting the series made, the fight scene between the two barbarians was pitiful. I love the creators and the characters but, this was not a good comic at all. All build up and no pay off... horrible comic. Read any of the early Groo stuff or any of the early Marvel comics Conan Sal Buscema stuff

A Quiet Masterpiece

As most probably know by now, Reasons To Be Happy is a sequel to Labute's earlier play Reasons To Be Pretty, and picks up 3 years later to take another look into the lives of it's characters Greg, Steph, Kent and Carly. A plot summary really doesn't do the play justice: Greg is now dating Carly, but Steph is ready to give things another shot with Greg. Kent is struggling to reconcile his naturally aggressive tendencies with his desire to be a decent/present father and to establish some kind of healthy adult relationship with his new girlfriend (who may be cheating on him). No, the true power of the play lies in the way Labute quietly explores how people make the same mistakes twice, attract dysfunction, and knowingly avoid making the right decisions.

As a stand-alone story, the play is funny, touching, and very entertaining. As a companion piece to Pretty, it takes on whole new dimensions, developing into something far more poignant and ambitious. Given that the play is a "sequel" audiences will likely expect a story that takes off in some dynamic new direction, or present us with major character transformations. But the fact of the matter is that most people don't change-- we talk, we plan, we pledge, we make resolutions, but if we're being really honest...? Stories about self-realization, growing up and coming of age only show the beginning stages. We can realize something dark or true that needs to change about ourselves, we often do, but how often do we take the hard path to make those changes? This story shows that while the desire to grow can be there, and the lessons can be learned, the struggle is often less exciting, less self-satisfying than simply continuing with life as usual.

It's what I admire so much about filmmakers like John Cassavetes, and fiction authors like W. Somerset Maughm-- they're not afraid to acknowledge moral ambiguity, the drama of inaction, and the persistence of personal stasis. In theatre, however, these kind of practitioners are quite a bit harder to find. REASONS TO BE HAPPY explores the simple imperfections of daily living and the profound struggles it's characters face in trying to make the simplest choices. It's a work of staggering power, sensitivity and understanding. `What I wouldn't give to see a theatre company perform this and PRETTY in a single evening.

Better Than I Expected

Let me say first, that I am in big Neil LaBute fan. As a theatre director, I own more of his works than any other playwright. I love the style of his writing. I like how he goes to dark places or touches subjects, that others may not venture to. Moreover, he makes it easy on directors, like myself, who have small casts, small sets and a limited budget.

I was directing Reasons To Be Pretty in West Virginia, when I heard that the sequel to our play, Reasons To Be Happy, was going up Off-Broadway. I was a little worried, at first. Reasons To Be Pretty was such a great script, that I knew I wanted to direct it, once I finished reading it, the first time.

I'm also not a fan of sequels, especially in the theatre world. I know some may disagree with me on this topic and I'm okay with that.

I ordered it from Amazon and I immediately opened it on the front porch and started reading it. I didn't bother to sit down, first. I had to know what happened to the four characters after Reasons To Be Pretty. I was pretty shocked at where the story went. I was also pleased that you didn't necessarily need to have read Reasons To Be Pretty to enjoy this play (although it certainly helps).

I passed the script to all four actors in our cast of Reasons To Be Pretty. Most of them were fairly pleased with it. So was I. Maybe I had low expectations, because of my view of sequels.

If you are a fan of Neil LaBute, you're going to want to add this one to your collection. If you are thinking about picking up this play, you may want to read the vanity trilogy first (The Shape of Things, Fat Pig and Reasons To Be Pretty) before purchasing Reasons To Be Happy. I think you'll have a better understand of what Neil LaBute is going for, in "Happy".

Reasons

This play is calm. There are no out-of-the-blue twists. No crazy last minute turn of events. LaBute has begun to evolve as a playwright. This play is not an indication of that evolution come full circle, but part of the process.

LaBute revisits characters from his 2009 Tony-nominated "reasons to be pretty." I read an interview where LaBute explained that the idea to revisit characters came to him first, long before he had decided which play to revisit. It's a curious decision, to check in on characters from his most successful play. A daunting task. And he almost did it.

"Reason to be Happy" isn't bad. It may not be fair to judge this play while using its predecessor as a source, but there is a lot of backstory missing for those who are not somewhat familiar with "reasons to be pretty." LaBute writes with more control than he did four years prior. This dialogue is less choppy on the page, but it is still ripe with profanity. The writing is spotty. It's already so hard to feel any empathy for the play's protagonist, the ever-indecisive and infuriatingly ignorant Greg: it doesn't help that the writing is weak.

However, not everything is negative. "Reasons to be Happy" has its moments of hilarity, often from a character's ignorance, like Steph not knowing who Martin Luther King Jr. is. Sure, it sounds a bit like subtle racism, and yes, maybe that does diminish the charm of this stage rom-com-dram, but whatever. It's a look into the future. And LaBute will get there, some day.

A hit-and-miss from one of my favorite modern dramatists. I'm sticking around.
