Interesting but a bit too ambitious and potentially misleading

Cressie and Wikle's book is one of the first to address space time models from a statistical point a view and using many of the latest statistical models (the soon to be updated 2003 book Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis for Spatial Data also covered the topic). Hierarchical space time models, Dynamical linear models, incorporating scientific knowledge into your statistical model, and handling massive data by using Fixed Rank Kriging are some of the topics covered. However, there are many intricacies that need to be addressed when modelling spatial data or temporal data. So writing a book covering data using both indices is no easy task. The task to write a book on spatio-temporal models only becomes harder when the goal is to cover the topic from a Bayesian point of view (a field of analysis with its own intricacies that need to be addressed). I believe the authors did a good job in presenting some of the latest space-time models proposed in research. However, there are big issues that are not covered in the book.
- The importance of convergence diagnostics for Bayesian models must be emphasized one way or another when discussing these types of methods. The book pretty much does not touch on convergence at all.
- Research has shown that Matern covariance parameters such as the smoothing parameter and the range, cannot be consistently estimated. This may lead to convergence problems when using MCMC techniques to extract characteristics from the posteriors of these parameters of interest (I found out about this the hard way as a grad student). As a result, at best, only partially reliable inference from your Bayesian analysis may be obtained, a disappointing fact given how computationally intensive Bayesian methods are for space-time models. Considering the major issue, space-time Bayesian models can hardly be called state of the art (as tagged several times in the book). Sadly, this convergence issue is not mentioned at all in the book which would lead to frustration for those constructing these models to try to understand a process of interest.
- Kriging is referred to as the Best Linear Unbiased Predictor. In theory this is true, but this is assuming the spatial covariance parameters are known, which is not really the case in practice. Although this often does not affect much the results if the Gaussian distribution assumption holds, it may drastically affect prediction variances for non-Normal distributions. Cressie has done work on the subject. It appears this issue is not discussed in the book though and if so, it should be clearly emphasized.
- Fixed Rank Kriging (FRK) is referred to as a best linear unbiased predictor. Is it not! In fact, since in practice kriging is often implemented by plugging in estimated parameters into the equations (making the the resulting estimated best linear unbiased predictor an approximation), FRK is truly an approximation of an approximation of the best linear unbiased predictor.
The book proposes its methods as a way to conduct science the way it ought to be: in a critical way, transparent, reproducible and in an objective manner. But the points brought up above makes the book a bit disappointing since it is not critical about the methods that are proposed, which although useful, are certainly not perfect. If there is a new edition in the future, I suggest the authors cover some important material left out and also address some challenges faced when implementing these methods.

Very comprehensive and clear coverage of formal mathematical spatiotemporal statistics

This is a massive, and authoritative treatise on spatio-temporal statistics. It focuses on formal mathematical treatments, and the maths can be intense, but if you really want to understand the theoretical underpinnings, and the tradeoffs between different approaches, this is a great book.

I really like the attention to detail and couching everything in terms a hierarchy of models: Data (the connection between your actual measured values and the underlying "real" quantities), Process (the connection between the "real" quantities and the processes that create them), and Parameters (the parameters that characterize the process; the parameter model is intimately related to Bayesian priors). Cressie and Wikle's clarity about the distinctions between these different levels in the hierarchy really help me to clearly understand things that are blurred in other treatments.

The authors take a largely Bayesian approach to modeling and analysis and present it clearly and compellingly. If you're serious about working with spatiotemporal data, this book belongs right next to Box and Jenkins on your bookshelf.

good but anticipate the next edition

This book contains some interesting topics like Kriging method and Kalman filtering. These two topics currently are used in Meteorological operation units, but not so many Meteorologists are familiar with. The authors combining the differential equations and probability models are very good try especially using different typing colors for different models; e.g. blue for process, green for data, red for posterior. However, the derivations of the equations are not so clear. The authors neither gave more details about the equations nor introduced the background motivations; for example, not introduce Kalman filtering's covariance update form from where. After all, this is a book not a journal papers. Anyway, I anticipate the next edition and hope the authors can discuss these things more.
On the other hand, not about the contents of the book, the printing quality of the book is not good. It seems just using low-end and low-resolution laser printer to print this book. The words are blurred, and probably one droplet water can make the words faint. Also, the layout is poor like the lectures in class. I totally agree with one previous reviewer saying the bad printing quality of this book.

I feel bad for this poor guy and all he had to go through. What is scary is that something like this could happen to anyone. I had a difficult time getting into the book and almost gave up on it several times. It goes into so much details describing all the different alcoholic drinks, who bought each round and where they met to drink the next day and that night and the next day and so on.

I didn't start to get into the book until around page two hundred. Up until then it read like a book on the adventures of an alcoholic. The poor guy never seemed to learn his lesson. He loses his job and everything he owns due to alcohol and what does he do? He changes where he lives but continues his self-disdructive behavior. Even when the journalist takes him in while he's out on bail, he continues his alcoholic behavior. I'm wondering if he ever did learn or is he still living like that.

A DETAILED STORY OF A YOUNG MAN AND HIS TRIBULATIONS

WRONG PLACE WRONG TIME is the first book written by David Perlmutter and what a fantastic story he has to tell.

The biography is of a young successful man who had it all, and lost it all by making one careless mistake. This error in judgement caused a chain reaction of errors that took David on a roller-coaster of misfortunes and plain, bad luck. The book certainly fits the title. We've all been at the wrong place and wrong time. David has been there numerous times.

This story is well-written and gripping to the end. I applaud the author for telling his story. It's a quick read that you will want to finish in one setting just because it's that captivating.

Highly recommended. Brilliant story sir.

Very mixed feelings, 2.5 stars.

This is a true story written by the author, about how he ended up being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A place that no one in their right mind wants to be - behind bars in a foreign country, accused of a heinous crime.

This story is well-written with a gritty reality that might bother some people. The author doesn't spare the reader's sensabilities, using at times very raw phrases and invective. However, it never felt like the author used foul language egregiously, in my opinion. It does not seem like he hides any of the choices he made, leading to his predicament.

It starts with the author "living the life" of a successful real estate agent. He doesn't say how long he had been working in this job, but he does tell the reader about the night of drinking and drugs which caused him to lose his license and his job. But instead of trying to get his life in order, he goes off to Marbella, Spain, continuing the behavior which got him into trouble in the first place. He then takes the reader along on his trip downward, until he gets back home to England.

Although this is a very interesting tale, and I can appreciate the effort that it took for the author to relive his disgrace, I am disturbed by a few things. Throughout the book, it seems like he echoes his title, saying "I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time." Repeatedly. But as I read, I couldn't shake the feeling that the author never quite accepted the fact that his behavior and poor choices landed him in the mess in the first place. He proclaims his innocence, which indeed may be the case. But we only have the author's word for that. It still feels like he blames others or circumstances beyond his control, rather than his lack of discretion and addictive/self-destructive behavior which ended up affecting more than just himself. Because of this, I had difficulty enjoying the book or feeling entirely sympathetic towards the author. Others might see things differently.

Planning on no pain meds? You NEED to read this book!

I only made it half way through this book and my son came early and even having only read half the book, I honestly don't think there is enough space for me to praise "Mindful Birthing" on here. I can't say thank you enough! When it came to having a natural child birth I can say the two biggest factors that kept me going were having a doula and reading this book. EVERYTHING Nancy says is dead on. I was just expecting to be in pain, I didn't know that the times between contractions are actually pleasurable because of oxytocin and that fearing the pain of the next contraction or getting caught up on the pain of the last one causes our body to produce adrenaline and that blocks oxytocin slowing down labor and making it more painful. In the 2nd part of labor I was actually falling in and out of sleep. There was a woman across the hall screaming her head off and I listened as the nurses mentioned all the pain meds they gave her and I had people in shock with how calm I was with no meds. My boyfriend couldn't believe how calm I was. I'm the kind of person who couldn't handle pain before I was afraid of it. I cried over a stubbed toe. I am no longer afraid of physical pain. I had my birth at the hospital with a midwife, we actually brought a birthing tub and had high hopes of our son being born in the water but they took me out of the water to take my vitals and he was born 15 minutes later in the bed.

The pain management exercises using ice are GENIUS! I found myself using the body scan very often. I was able to successfully investigate a slight pain in my right foot during several contractions and focus on the parts of my body that didn't hurt and felt just fine.

Every birth is different but in my experience I agree with Nancy, the first time I "couldn't take it anymore" I got in the hot water and it just REALLY helped me out. The 2nd time I couldn't take it anymore I was 10 contractions away from giving birth. I actually begged for pain meds around 10 centimeters and the nurse laughed and said "sweetie it's too late for that, you are 10 centimeters dilated you needed to ask for that 2 centimeters ago" I couldn't believe it. Avoiding looking at the clock REALLY helped. I didn't want to hear how far apart my contractions were and didn't want to hear anyone in the room talk about any plans or anything to do with clock time, that sounds crazy but it helped a lot just to keep me present. Ironically my son was on the same page because up until the last contraction my contractions were never the same time apart. I think the last two were like 10, 3, 5.

So YES I was in labor for 12 hours and YES it hurt! But it was doable! And with that pain comes an amazing power that follows after. The rewards are endless. Thanks to this book and the support of my doula, my boyfriend, mom and amazing friends. Again, I know every birth is different but in all honesty this book had me practicing techniques that made it possible. The two most difficult parts for me were when I felt my sons head pass through my pelvis, The pelvis actually cracks open, and the sensation is intense, but by the time you have time to judge it it's over, it's very fast. The other part is the burning "ring of fire" at the very end. But at that time I was 3 pushes away from my son being delivered.

I love this book

I love this book. Keeping it because it has some great meditation tips for life and listening to your child and body. Even if meditation isn't your idea of a good time (i didn't practice much), this book can teach you ways to cope with life in general. I partially accredit the natural birth of my 8.9lb baby to this book. I don't know if i could have done it without using the techniques and mindfulness learned in this book. Would highly recommend this book to any mother-to-be regardless of birth plan since it discussed the ins and outs of any type of birth, pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond.

This book provides an abbreviated review of organic functional groups, with special emphasis on pharmacophores. The review is well organized and concise, and provides a primer (or review) of IUPAC and Chem Abstracts nomenclature. Recommended for anyone from the student studying for an organic final to the medicinal chemistry professional. Excellent reference.

i have been exposed to quite a bit of organic/biochemistry but this book is very well written and serves as a review to these fields as well as a nice intoduction to medicinal chemistry. i guess they all kind of blend together anyway but lemke is a fantastic author, well worth the investment.

This book is good if you want a quick read on FGs in Medicinal Chemistry, you can read it in 3 sessions and pick up some concepts here and there, but you will need to look in other places to expand your knowledge more in depth. For that, I would rather save the money and use it towards the purchase of a good medicinal chemistry book, where you will find the same information and more.... don't get me wrong, this book here is perfect if you have to travel or commute to work by bus or train and need some reading, but to learn beyond it, then this is not for you,

About the Author

Brenda Laurel has worked in interactive media since 1976 as a designer, researcher, writer and teacher. She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science and Affiliated Faculty for Games and Playable Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Dr. Laurel previously served as Professor and Founding Chair of the graduate program in design at California College of Arts and the Media Design Program at Art Center College of Design. She previously was a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems Labs (2005-2006). Based on her research in gender and technology at Interval Research, she co-founded Purple Moon in 1996 to create interactive media for girls. In 1990 she co-founded Telepresence Research, focusing on virtual reality and remote presence. Other employers have included Atari, Activision, and Apple. Her books include The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design (1990), Computers as Theatre, Second Edition (forthcoming 2013), Utopian Entrepreneur (2001), and Design Research: Methods and Perspectives (2004). She earned her BA from Depauw University and her MFA and PhD in theatre from The Ohio State University.

Putting dramatic structure on the user interface

The idea that is perhaps most central to this book is that if you design the action involved in a user interface, the design of all other objects in the domain will follow. To support this, Laurel reconciles the seemingly disparate and relates user interface design with producing a play in theater. For example, the way she brings in the Freytag triangle works very well.
This said, I wish I wish that we would see a book from Laurel (or from one of her other usability guru companions) that treats with more recent issues-- particularly the Internet. I think she's one of the smartest people out there in the field, and I try to read what she's written, but I'm getting tired of reading about Habitat, Guides, and the Holodek on Star Trek. That's not the fault of the book, given that it came out pre-Internet hype, but it did inflect the reading experience with some weariness.

Good ideas, but I felt the book lacked a clear focus.

I finished reading "Computers as Theater" by Brenda Laural yesterday. The book has many good ideas in it, and it may well be worth reading just to pick these up.
It is also one of those books which does not do a good job of unifying its material, in my opinion. Rather than being a progression of ideas that builds to some intellectual climax, it meanders through various interesting points not quite aimlessly. The book introduces two useful diagrams: 'flying wedges' which describe how the space of possibilities in a drama go from the 'possible' to converge on the 'necessary', and 'freytag triangles', which measures the rise and fall of a plot. If these are used to describe this book (a slight abuse?), it doesn't fare well. The freytag diagram never peaks, and the wedge doesn't converge to the 'necessary'. This may be because the objectives for the book were not clear. As a reader, I didn't realize she was not (mostly) speaking to the modern commercial software world for quite a while into the book. The book also ended with two chapters about virtual reality (the substance, not the hype), and I was left wondering if perhaps *this* was what the book was really about (if so, I didn't see it coming).
All that said: there are many good ideas in the book, some of which will make you stop and think for a while (e.g. those diagrams). It is valuable because of this. As an individual, I simply wish the book had been better structured, for I'd have gotten more out of it.

I especially liked her comparison of computers to theatrical production - a tremendous amount of action goes on "behind the scenes."
