About the Author
James Tanton was born in Adelaide, Australia, and attended the University of Adelaide. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University, and has taught at New College of the University of South Florida, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and Merrimack College. He has won several awards for teaching excellence. James Tanton is currently the Interim Director of Boston's Math Circle, a program of courses for students of all ages who enjoy mathematics and want the challenge of new and exciting topics. Believing that mathematics really is accessible to all, he is committed to sharing the joy and beauty of pure mathematics. He has worked with mathematics educators of all levels to help create a lively mathematics culture within school and college mathematics departments. He is a frequent contributor to the student magazine, published by The Mathematical Association of America, Math Horizons.

Insightful and Concise

Not only are these "cool problems," but also they are organized in the most useful way. In the first third of the book, Tanton states the problems. The middle section offers some hints if you are struggling, and extensions if you are not. Fortunately the hint section is not too close to the first section, so it's easier to enjoy struggling for a longer time. Finally, the solutions are given in the final section (after more delightful struggling). The explanations are concise, enjoyable, and explain the problems with more insight that most write-ups you will find in other books or online. If feels as if Mr. Tanton is there, urging you on, encouraging you, and providing the tools you need to make sense of these great problems.

I use this book (and others by Tanton) in my Math Circle, with homeschoolers, and for myself. Another easy-to-use feature is the index at the end, sorted by mathematical concept/topic.

Superb book

This is a wonderful book for students and teachers alike. Sophisticated mathematics is made accessible to everyone. Written with humor, thoughtfulness and a real sense of where people have difficulties and how to get around them, Tanton puts his finger on the pleasures and promises of each problem. Not to be missed, no matter how experienced or inexperienced you are.

Very enjoyable with good information

If you are starting out collecting Vietnam era militaria or have a pretty good knowledge of what you are about this book is very helpful. Excellet photos and specifics. I can't really say that the pricing is accurate as most of what I encounter seems to run a bit less than the prices shown, but it made me feel very good about the value of the items I have. It also depicted items I need to be looking for. All in all I think the book is well worth your time and money.

What can I say. It is somewhat the definitive DITA book. I liked the first edition better because it wasn't so unnecessarily wordy but, if you are going on to DITA 1.2, you have to get this book. Too many important changes and enhancements to not.
