Braudel was the most prominent member of the Annales school of history in post-World War II France. This history, originally published in 1963 as part of curriculum reform for French secondary students, was eventually judged by French school teachers as too hard for their students and was withdrawn. More than half the book is devoted to the development of Western civilization, and despite the judgment of French school teachers, it is suitable for serious high school students along with undergraduate and public libraries.

A leader of the Annales school, which reacted against the prominence of politics and personalities in historiography, Braudel wrote based on la longue dur{‚}ee, emphasizing the material basis of daily life--the routine workings of commerce as it changes over the long term. This outlook has gradually permeated the profession, and, as so often happens when a good idea proves unstoppable, its proponent takes a turn at textbook writing. This is the late Braudel's 1962 lesson for French university students on the origin of European, Islamic, Indian, Asian, and New World civilizations. As a text it wasn't widely adopted, perhaps because France was then in a political uproar, pitting its colonialists--heirs to the civilizing mission of the nineteenth century--against decolonizers. And the book bears that sign of its time: The colonial motif pops up everywhere, presented as a timeless feature of ways of life in collision. So it was at the Battle of Tours in 732, which stopped the Muslim juggernaut; and so it is now in the anti-Western sentiments in the Arab world. Whether the conflict split religion and religion, town and country, or liberty and right, the colonial view benefits from Braudel's phenomenal depth of knowledge and synthesizing agility, and his palpable curiosity enlivens the sometimes deadly textbook form. The First and Still the Best Multidisciplinary World History

When Fernand Braudel originally published this text in the sixties, he became a pariah at the Sorbonne. In retrospect that disapprobation was the kind of seal of approval that "banned in Boston" came to embody. Previous histories drilled deep into one facet of history. Braudel's was a pioneering effort in multidisciplinary historical analysis. It captures the historical flow that evolves civilizations, sacrificing only the detail outside the themes. Even subsequent to "A History of Civilizations," other historians have been unable to write a thematic survey that matches this original. And don't be tempted to skip the "soft" introductory chapters with titles like "The Study of Civilization Involves All the Social Sciences," and "The Continuity of Civilizations." These tee up the hard topics, like "The Greatness and Decline of Islam." There's method in Braudel's approach, and it takes patience. Braudel's translator, Richard Mayne had his job cut out for him. The complex syntax is that of a French intellectual of the sixties, and it is retained in Mayne's text, but you become accustomed to it. Don't look for maps or photographs in this Penguin Paperback; the text alone is six hundred pages. There's only one other book in this space, "From Dawn to Decadence," by Jacques Barzun. In my view they are complementary.

So so, but ....

Braudel is considered one of the great 20th c. historians. He fought the French educational establishment to broaden the scope of history to include material from sociology, anthropology, geography, etc., and above all economics. This was in opposition to the traditional kings and battles approach, and this book was intended as a textbook (not accepted by the authorities). Arguably the movement's been quite fruitful, but this book is a very mixed bag - occasionally excellent, sometimes quite bad, and usually mediocre to good. It's also not a history of civilizations - it deals with what Braudel considered the great living civilizations - and rather than being history as usually understood, it describes primary characteristics of each with some development over time. Even the treatment of each "civilization" varies a great deal from one to the next, e.g. considerable space is devoted to the literature of Latin America while not to the others. The civilizations included are the Muslim World, Black Africa, the Far East (includes India), then Europe and European civilization elsewhere (to which he devotes half the book).

In spite of the many gaps, blind spots and weaknesses, there are some real high points and original insights. For example, Braudel points out that, while the Crusades are usually seen as unmitigated folly in the West, and while they achieved nothing lasting on land, at their beginning the Mediterranean was dominated by Islam while at their end it was dominated by the West. This had important consequences limiting Islamic power and culture while removing constraints from those of the West. He's probably at his best dealing with the West and Islam, and at his worst dealing with Latin America. To his credit he doesn't pass over Africa as so many do, but gives it reasonable attention, describing among other things the great trading societies which grew up as a result of contact with Islam. His take on the United States is fairly sane, with useful analyses of the evolution of American capitalism and of the centralization of power and growth of bureaucracy in the Executive branch of the Federal government. But the section on the US has its share of romanticisms and a couple chauvinisms (that statement probably applies to all societies outside Europe, and perhaps to European ones as well). His take on the Soviet Union is balanced to slightly sympathetic, although it's odd that we never hear of the millions killed by Stalin (or Mao).

Braudel's rejection of traditional historical narrative, with its landmarks and mileposts, sometimes leaves you wondering what, where and when it is that he's talking about. More importantly, he has a great weakness for making overarching generalizations, usually devoid of rational arguments stocked with facts which might lead us to share his conclusions. It's often transparently obvious that these generalizations can neither explain the entire phenomenon they purport to explain, nor can the explanation be so simple. After a few of these you start to question Braudel's judgment. He also spends a fair amount of time contemplating then-contemporary problems and speculating about the future. He defends this, but his performance is unconvincing, particularly in light of events since he wrote (1962). All the same, for someone who doesn't expect this book to be comprehensive or even, and who reads it along with world histories which are, it's still worth reading for its strengths and for the not-infrequent original insights.

The best all-around ablation guide

This book, along with another edited in part by Dr. John Miller (Clinical Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology, w Ziad Issa and Doug Zipes) make up a core foundation of practical electrophysiology. This book provides more pragmatic information than other texts, without skipping the essential details necessary for a good case, but also without wasting excessive time in criteria unlikely to be used, or redundant verbiage. The tables are particularly well-done and help to guide you toward criteria, maneuvers, and parameters when you just need a quick reference in a case or consult. The other book provides the detailed explanation of the basis of each of the criteria and maneuvers, as well as a more extensive set of resources as to the primary literature. Even if you own the prior edition of this book, this is certainly worth the upgrade if only for the improved quality of tables and graphics. A great job by the editors, and a testament to the increasing quality of the expert consult series.

Nicholas T. Dines, FASLA, is a professor of landscape architecture and former director of the landscape architecture graduate program at the University of Massachusetts where for over 30 years, he has taught courses in site engineering, structures, design studio, design drawing, design theory, and professional practice. He is the co-editor of McGraw-Hill's Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Architecture; co-author of Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Construction Details CD, and its companion publication, Time-Saver Standards Concise Site Construction Details Manual; and author of, Landscape Perspective Drawing. He has over 32 years of professional experience, including a 10-year period of work on residential and recreational design projects in Greece. He currently is conducting research in multi-media applications to both professional and academic design and planning practices, with a special focus on site construction and sustainable design. He has a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a MLA degree from Harvard University. His home is in Williamsburg, Massachusetts.

Mary, I want to know more!

Mary's book is very well written; she tells her story in a way that you would sit down and talk to a dear friend. She is in no way preachy, judgmental, or condescending of anyone, Mary simply tells her story with compassion to alert and warn people of exactly what they are opening themselves to if they are dabbling with the occult. Just a little dabble do you. :-) People need to know there is an unseen dimension that the Bible tells us is even more real than the physical world we see and live in. There is a war raging in that dimension and is spilling over into this world faster than lightening, but the Church was lulled to sleep over the last 50 years and is now comatose.

I have also listened to several interviews that Mary has done, and you can tell in her voice that she is just a genuinely loving and caring person. Again, like she is talking to you as a good friend. I highly recommend this book and urge those who would like to know more to search out her interviews on YouTube.

Good read, it will leave you thinking

Just finished reading the book. It is an auto-biographical account of one woman's struggle with her experience as a programmed multiple and her victory in Jesus over the powers of darkness. The book is engaging, informative and is a quick read. The vitriol of the one star "review" is unfounded and I doubt if that individual even read the book. The book will definitely leave you thinking and praying.

I am a Christian living amidst a large coven of witches…...

I am a Christian living amidst a large coven of witches, and needed information on the finer points of how to deal with this type of paganism. For example, the Bible instructs us to "love our neighbor as ourselves," but did this mean I had to allow witches into my home merely to be nice?? Mary Lou Lake's book provides you the answers to those types of questions, AND MUCH MORE. In fact, I share with Mary many of the experiences she had with her local witches to the degree it is downright eerie. Seeing UFOs and having airplanes fly low over my home are but 2 examples we both have experienced. Yes, UFOs are witchcraft. In fact, on many of the occasions when I saw UFOs I was unwittingly in the presence of witches and I have NO doubt my witch neighbors were "conjuring up" these UFOs for me to see. Though I've read biographies of FORMER witches looking for this type of information, I had not found it in their books. Mary Lou Lake gives not only examples of her experiences, but also offers sound BIBLICAL DOCTRINE on how to manage the witchcraft being directed to Christians. I have found no other book even remotely similar or covering the topics Mary Lou does, as well as offering the answers. In this, Mary Lou's book is 100% unique. Therefore, if you've had bizarre, inexplicable incidents happen to you over the course of your life, you might want to consider that much of it was witchcraft.

My mother was married to 2 men (though not my father) who were high level freemasons and not at any time in her life did she realize her husbands were practicing "the craft," which is what witchcraft is called in freemasonry. Strange events from my childhood 50 years ago are only NOW making sense knowing that witchcraft was involved. It's only been in the last 2 years that I've learned freemasonry is satanism and witchcraft combined, before believing freemasonry was simply a "civic" organization. The the lower degrees of freemasonry may still believe that, it is anything BUT CIVIC.

In summary, I can't type enough positive accolades about Mary Lou's book. It has not only been a blessing to me, but has helped me in my walk with God and Jesus Christ. And even if you don't believe you HAVE YET been targeted by witches or witchcraft, in theses End Times, I consider it crucial to know what Satan's children are capable of and how to combat it, for we ALL will be seeing strange things/events and need to know how to fight them with Biblical knowledge. Mary Lou's book provides much of that knowledge.

Lastly, have you heard of the CERN reactor in Switzerland? Many Christians believe this has been built solely to open portals by which demons can enter our dimension and be seen in our realm. I think they may be right. If true, Mary Lou's book is ever more valuable to read and learn.

The first two chapters situate Kant's project against the background of Continental rationalism and British empiricism, the dominant schools of early modern philosophy. Eleven chapters then expound and assess all the main arguments of the Critique. Finally, four chapters recount the enormous influence of the Critique on subsequent philosophical movements, including German Idealism and Neo-Kantianism, twentieth-century Continental philosophy, and twentieth century Anglo-American analytic philosophy. Paul Guyer is Professor of Philosophy and Florence R. C. Murray Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught since 1982. He is the author or editor of fourteen previous books on Immanuel Kant, and co-general editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant, in which he has co-edited and co-translated the Critique of Pure Reason, the Critique of the Power of Judgment, and Notes and Fragments.

Not much companionship

Not a good "companion" for anyone but a specialist with a Ph.D. More like a bunch of professional papers that might as well have been in a special edition of some Kant journal. Seems like Cambridge could have pushed these authors to be a bit more accessible. Not a good choice for students.
