Book Review - Come Into My Trading Room by Dr Alexander Elder
It was with a great deal of curiosity that I began to read Come Into My Trading Room. Trading for a Living, Elders first and classic book was the second trading book I ever read and even 40 or so books on from there I still rate it in my top five and frequently recommend it to others who want a considered and honest introduction to trading.
I was interested to see how the themes and emphasis had changed and developed in the nine years since the first book was published. I had briefly read a couple of reviews that suggested it didn't add much to the previous book but I was eager to make my own mind up.
So the first question I asked myself was what hasn't changed?
The style of writing is as clear and engaging as in the first book. The layout is logical and in all key areas he suggests further, more specialised reading to take you deeper into the subjects that may interest you. For the size of the book (only 313 pages), it is very comprehensive and covers the three main areas of competence for a trader. Psychology, Technical Analysis and Money Management. So the three pillars from the first book are still very much standing.
What is different? A great deal in my opinion. The psychology section is vastly improved. I thought that to be the main weakness in the first book, with an over reliance on the AA model which (because of my professional background I have issues with) He draws the title of the psychology section from another excellent book by Mark Douglas, again giving the impression that Elder himself has been learning a lot over the past few years.
The technical analysis section goes much less into describing basic TA than the first book did and instead focuses more on the application of TA to trading. It also includes an update on a method first described in the first book the "triple screen" and a section on systems trading and system testing. As someone who is toying with developing systems at the current time I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the distinction between systems and discretionary traders.
The book is not just aimed at day traders, in fact he lays great emphasis on people examining their own motives to become day traders suggesting that you require at least a years successful experience with end of day trading before you move to intraday trading. He does ask his readers to answer tough questions about themselves and if you are able to give honest answers you will profit greatly from this book.
He also concurs with one of my prejudices, which I am happy to repeat here, he stresses that traders should take their first steps in inexpensive markets to trade. So with futures for example trading the Eurostoxx50 at 10 euros per point is a better starting point for the new trader than Dax at 25 euros per point. He also provides a helpful method for working out which markets you can afford to trade. It is this applied aspect of the book that makes it so valuable. There is no irrelevant padding here, every paragraph has relevance.

The overall balance of the book is about perfect now. In the first book the basic TA took up a large percentage of the volume, this time the sections are much more equitable, with quite rightly, money management and record keeping getting a much more through treatment than in the previous book.
One change in this book (and I did wonder if he had read Tony Oz's wonderful "The Stock Trader") is an addition of some actual trade examples. I always like seeing these because following them through gives a real insight into the traders mind in a way simple chart examples can't.
I think there is a more cautious/warning tone about this book than the first. I suspect this might be because Elder runs trading camps and has had lots of experiences with wannabe traders since writing the first book. He's very aware of the main reasons why people fail and makes these very explicit in the text.
There is also a very good and well referenced basic description of the major trading instruments their advantages and disadvantages something that was missing from the first book.
The section for new traders (or babes in the wood) as he calls them covers the basics of setting up to trade from home, which instruments and markets to look at and the issues of commission, slippage and expenses. He stresses the importance of the bottom line and the need to keep trading expenses such as commission under control
Conclusion
This is a book written by a mature trader and trader educator, who has seen and done it all and can now give the most balanced, practical and honest description of learning to trade you will find anywhere. I highly recommend it to new traders and improvers alike.

An Excellent Follow-Up to Elder's Trading For A Living

Alexander Elder gained well-deserved prominence for his first book, Trading For a Living. It's one of my favorite books on trading. Out of this classic came such new indicators as the Force Index, which is one of the indicators I use regularly in my chart software. I read Elder's follow-up, Come Into My Trading Room, in hopes of learning additional insights of the Force Index. While I found some new information here, I was even more impressed by the following lessons Elder shared:
1) "Some of the best trading opportunities occur after false breakouts" - I'm finding this more and more these days, which is why I actively use my Momentum Divergence indicators to separate the fakeouts from the real breakouts. Elder does a great job showing numerous charts throughout his book, laying the groundwork for the divergence examples he explains in great depth when you step into his trading room in the final chapter with many actual trading examples. You need to understand the concept of divergence to trade today's markets more profitably, and this book will be a great help in showing you how to trade divergence setups.
2) Triple Screen - Elder explains the important of using multiple timeframes, though he advocates two to no more than three time frames. The key concept is that whatever timeframe you use, you need to go up to the next longer timeframe to get confirmation. This provides the bigger picture trend to define the nature of your trades, and then you can return to the shorter timeframe and make more tactical decisions with this broader trend in mind as well.
3) Grade Your Performance - Elder actually quantifies trading effectiveness by defining the width of the channel for a stock, and what percentage of the move the trader actually captured to determine his grade. Regardless of how a trader measures his performance, it must be tracked in order to make improvements and experience constant improvement.
4) The SafeZone Stop - While I have not tested this indicator in my systems yet, Elder's SafeZone Stop looks like a more effective way to place a trailing stop than standard moving averages. The SafeZone Stop appears to adjust more rapidly to trending versus flat periods for a stock, compared to moving averages. This new technique should easily be worth many times the price of this book by itself.
5) Chapter 9: Trading for a Living - This chapter was my most highlighted chapter, as Elder covers the stages of growth from beginning to professional trader, covering a wide range of topics on trading discipline, time management, organization and developing a viable trading plan, to highlight just a few.
All in all, Come Into My Trading Room is an excellent follow-up to Elder's Trading For A Living, and I think you'll also find it a quick and thought-provoking read.

Not crazy about it

Too well written for a 1-star, and you just have to respect the author of Trading for a Living. But I was quite disappointed.

Essentially it's a trend following methodology of entering on pullbacks to the 20 MA and exiting when they extend to the outer band (envelope, band, channel, it doesn't matter). Classic indicators are tweaked slightly and pitched as "Elder Indicators" which of course you can buy the disks for. Really this whole book could have been condensed to a 3 or 4 page .pdf file and not left any of the concepts out.

He advises against day-trading and questions whether it can actually be done profitably. That is pretty short-sighted of him in light of all the known profitable daytraders out there. His reasoning is that with his method it would be too difficult. That came across as egotistical and closed-minded to me.

The thing that really threw me off is that after a book teaching a trend-following system (and warning against other methods), the last section of chart examples are all counter-trend trades! Every single one of them is completely the opposite of what is taught in the book. You would think he could have thrown in at least one actual example that actually was trading the method in the book?

I joined his mailing list after reading the book and after almost two years of being on it, not one example of a trade set-up that comforms to the method in this book has been given. Instead, periodic "opinions" of market direction have been given for copper, oil, bonds, and the S&P 500. This from a guy who says don't have opinions on market direction. Too boot, all of them have been wrong! Got to wonder about this guy now, was Trading for a Living just a lucky fluke?

Self-Improvement Spiritually and Otherwise

Nehemiah's work in the Old Testament is used as an anology for this study of improving one's self. This rebuilding of the wall of the city is similar to the process of God restoring His people today. Pastor Hayford discribes the mission of the Holy Spirit as that of helping you to maximize your potential. We're reminded of God's original intent in creating us, i.e., "man, created perfectly 'in the image of God,' was designed for large purposes and deep fulfillment." He adds, "relationship and rulership are fundamental to our created purpose."
An excellent point is made on time spent with God. It is essential above all else. Dr. Hayford tells us that we discover self-understanding when we're in God's presence. God's nature is revealed to us in His presence, i.e., to save, to heal, to rescue, to redeem, to provide, and to answer.
This is a deeply solid book. It is filled with insights that will transform your thinking. Reading it will bring you closer to God. Your confidence will increase as you are reminded that you are His project. He has committed Himself to you and He is working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes. "Rebuilding The Real You" by Jack Hayford is a great encouragement and challenge to allow God to restore you instead of trying a self-improvement program that is doomed to fail when done only in our strength.

Among some of the points covered by Hayford include:

1. Rebuilding a human personality is an undertaking the Holy Spirit will take on when we allow Him to do so.
2. Jesus said that unless we come to Him as a child, we cannot truly live as a child of God.
3. When hard times come, lean on the everlasting arms of the Almighty.
4. God is for us and is committed to our total restoration.
5. Regardless of how bleak circumstances are, Jesus Christ has given us the power and resources to overcome.
6. The devil will constantly try to hinder God's program for you.
7. Our vertical growth in Christ cannot be disassociated from our horizontal growth with people around us.

Jack Hayford is a unique Bible teacher, pastor, and leader. Every word evokes a myriad of feelings, thoughts, and ideas. This is a wonderful work and I was fortunate to get the earlier version too. It is amazing how well this teaching has withstood the test of time. This will make an EXCELLENT small group study, individual development or devotional.

You are worth the investment in yourself that the price of this book requires. More than that, you are worth the investment applying the teachings in this book will require of you.

This is simply put a remarkable and groundbreaking historical book on Harry Houdini: world renown magician, mischievous scoundrel, and clever spy. Reading like the best of intriguing novels, authors William Kalush and Larry Sloman have created a masterpiece worthy of every person's library in `The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero'.

This is one of the finest historical prose I have ever read. I can't recommend `The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero' enough. It will be `The' gift I give during the holiday season.

Was Houdini murdered by a cult? What was he getting close to? What threats did he hold?

Overall, this is a brilliant book, and I tip my hat to authors William Kalush and Larry Sloman: superior storytelling readers everywhere will enjoy.

Superb Biography Filled With Intrigue

This book must be ranked as the best biography on Houdini. It is so well written that I literally could not put it down.

I knew only Houdini the master magician, but he was so much more--possible spy for the US and Britain, inspiration for countries to develop an Air Force for the coming conflict (WWI), and even devulging some of his secrets in order to teach soldiers how they might escape from enemy prisons, etc. But of course the biggest story of all is his intense fight against fake mediums and their bilking the grieving of both their money and playing with their emotions.

Of particular interest is the conflict between Conan-Doyle and his band consisting of, among others, Dr. Crandon and his "medium" wife Margery. It is amazing how the creator of the world's greatest fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, could drop all reason when it came to these con artists. Doyle was obviously emotionally wrought over the death of his son, and it made him abandon the very aspects of rationality. His fictional character would have quickly proven that there was not just a million dollar industry based on fraud, but also there existed an equally strong possibility that Houdini was murdered. Doyle was not a fuzzy, warm guy when it came to another who challenged his irrational belief system, and it is unfortunate that one who is justly admired for his writing became so intertwined with the fake "religion" of spiritualism .

After reading this book, which dispels many of the myths and unlocks the real story not told by the media, I myself believe there is enough circumstantial evidence that Houdini was at the very least a victim of people who wanted to injure him enough that he would give up his anti-medium crusade. It is also possible that certain people intended for him to die--they certainly had the money and influence to have it done. Houdini himself towards the end of his life acted as though he knew he was doomed, realizing that the people against him were powerful enough to accomplish his end.

I now have a totally different view of this wonderful man and believe he was a martyr to the cause of exposing these predators of grieving people who used conjuring tricks to pull off their "schtick". He was truly a "Superhero" and this book brings the man back to life. The sad part is that he did not succeed and we are still plagued with these cruel charlatans. I recommend this book 100% without any hesitation.

This was an ok book. First, you cannot look inside before you buy but I bought it anyway. It has some good information but there are a lot better books out there on this subject. I thought it way over priced, so I returned it.

Wonderfully written

Very good book. I have several fermentation books, but realized when I read this book that if one were serious about fermentation and all its benefits, THIS is the FIRST book to START with. I say that because of the easy way it is presented. Reading this, highlighting, taking notes and really understanding this at a deep level, truly helped me better understand the other books I owned. My husband and I have already noticed favorable benefits as a result of actually implementing cultured vegetables and kefir. Eventually, we'll move on to Kombucha and Sourdough bread. I could go on and on about how we've benefited, but point is, I know that ferments will be a regular part of our lives. Had to give it four stars because I do think the book is overpriced. Just so you know, this review is based on my own opinion and experience and I'm wired to learn it intellectually in order for it to reach my nervous system along with experiential knowledge. As far as I'm concerned, fermentation is just one of life's best kept secrets to vibrant health. Again, just my opinion.

the joy, the sense of foreboding

This was an inside view of Mother Mary's heart from a sensitive poet's heart. It shows how a woman of intense Jewish spirituality in the1st century would have reacted to the request from God that she become the Mother of the Messiah, the one who is to come. The author captures: the excitement, the joy, the sense of foreboding, her need for legitimacy, her need to rely on her spouse on earth - St. Joseph, while complying with all of the requisites of the Law for a woman in her position. Then, the almost unbearable tenseness and immense sorrow that slowly unfolds as Jesus leaves her and fulfills his mission. As it culminates with his condemnation and crucifixion, her suffering goes beyond the ability to describe, and Mary enters into a oneness with her Divine Son as he suffers and dies in front of her on the cross. This is a wonderful poetic account of a woman of enormous stature and it helps the reader to better appreciate Mary and her singular place in human history.

Must Read - understand the heart of Our Blessed Mother.

This book/poem beautifully illustrates the heart of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. The reader comes to understand her thoughts, emotions, and, especially, her silence as she watches Jesus grow, enter public life, be crucified and resurrected.
The book may be a little difficult to get into, but by the time Jesus is lost in the temple, you can't put the book down. Truly a wonderful insight into Mary as she "pondered these things in her heart."

Actionable, entertaining, and easy to read

SEO Like I'm 5 is actionable, entertaining, and easy to read. SEO may seem like a very complex and difficult to understand topic, but Matthew does a great job of distilling it down in easy to understand language and format. Not only was it actionable and easy to understand, it is also quite entertaining and inspiring. In the year 2014 if you are not developing your online presence with content and search marketing, you may be completely missing the boat. The author is clearly an expert on the topic, so I highly recommend this book!

Capala should have read a book about how to publish a book.

OK - I'm a grumpy OLD guy. Haven't yet formed an opinion about the usefulness of the content, but a few early observations. Whoever printed the book chopped the last sentence or two off of many pages. Really? The illustrations (screen prints) are too small to be readable. Useless. There are constant, and I mean CONSTANT invitations to Tweet praise for some statement or the other. Hallelujah, brother! Very distracting.

I will write more once I finish reading and have a chance to try to put the content to use.

Finished it last night. This book seems to be directed to others of the same ilk as the author. If you are a self help author or aspiring writer, etc, there may well be useful content here. In other words, if you believe you can create on-going content that others will want to follow, there are hints and tools to use. If, on the other hand, your business is more static, or your clients are companies that are easily 1000 times your size(as mine are, hence unlikely to link to my site), there aint much here. I've gotta say, reading this book reminded me of watching a bunch of teenage girls hanging out together. They twitter and giggle and have their own vernacular and inside jokes and don't understand that there is a world outside of their own.

Again, I'm a old guy. Maybe I just don't get it.

About the Author
Nigel Gilbert read for a first degree in Engineering, intending to go into the computer industry. However, he was lured into sociology and obtained his doctorate on the sociology of scientific knowledge from the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Michael Mulkay. His research and teaching interests have reflected his continuing interest in both sociology and computer science (and engineering more widely).

His main research interests are processual theories of social phenomena, the development of computational sociology and the methodology of computer simulation, especially agent-based modelling. He is Director of the Centre for Research in Social Simulation.

He is also Director of the University's Institute of Advanced Studies and responsible for its development as a leading centre for intellectual interchange.

He is the author or editor of several textbooks on sociological methods of research and statistics and editor of the Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation.

Paul Stoneman is Lecturer in Sociology, University of Surrey.�
