Good book, but not as helpful as I would have hoped

I was very excited to start reading this book. I am already an experienced prenatal yoga teacher and an Iyengar student, so I figured this book would be perfect for me to continue my learning. However, I actually disagree with some of the suggestions in the book. For example, in the "Problems A-Z" section,the suggested poses for heartburn are almost all inversions. Which is the last thing you want to do when acid is already coming up the esophagus. I would have also liked to see some explanation for why certain poses are suggested to help alleviate different issues.

That said, the pictures and descriptions of the poses and excellent. I also really enjoyed the anatomy section at the end of the book.

THE book for yoga during pregnancy

My Iyengar yoga teacher told me about this book and I am so glad he did. It was exactly what I wished I had found earlier in my pregnancy. It is NOT specific to Iyengar yoga, either. If you practice yoga and want to continue to do so during conception, pregnancy, labor, and after, then this book will tell you which poses are okay for which trimester and which ones are not. Also how to modify common poses. There are recommended sequences for practice at home. The only drawback is that some of the poses rely on using a lot of equipment that you absolutely would not have at home--trestle, some crazy back-bending table, ropes hanging from ceilings. But this is not true of all the poses. I bought two blocks, a strap, a wedge, yoga ball, and a bolster and feel like I can do a lot of the poses on my own. I also think these props will be helpful during early labor at home. With this book, I am able, at 7 mos. pregnant, to continue in a Level 1/2 class with confidence!

I've made a couple of shakes and they're really tasty. However, many recipes rely on flavored yogurt or juice, which aren't actually part of my diet. So I'm trying to find workarounds. Would love to see more plain yogurt recipes and less sugary methods of flavoring. Hemp hearts would be a good addition too.

I have been looking into other ways to improve my diet, general health and energy level. This book offers an incredible variety of tasty ways to do so. The book doesn't only contain a mix of recipes, but the author explains the benefits of protein shakes, the different types of protein powders and some tips and pointers. The author is obviously passionate about the recipes throughout the book and is also very knowledgeable about the ingredients within and how they benefit the body. This is a great a delicious way to get your daily vitamins and nutrients!

I love my blender bottles, but I really needed to add some variety to my protein shakes. The author's journey has really shaped her recipes, working with healthy foods and keeping everyday convenience in mind, she's turned in some fantastic recipes, a really good section on choosing the best protein powders, and a must-read chapter on shaker bottle pointers. Haven't gotten around to all 125 but current favorites are Coffee-Caramel and the Spice Apple Parade.

About the Author
Alan S. Gurman, PhD, until his death in 2013, was Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. A pioneer in the development of integrative approaches to couple therapy, he edited and wrote many influential books; was a past two-term editor of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy; and was former President of the Society for Psychotherapy Research. Dr. Gurman received numerous awards for his contributions to couple and family therapy, including the Distinguished Achievement in Family Therapy Research Award from the American Family Therapy Academy and the Distinguished Contribution to Family Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association. He also received the Award for Distinguished Achievement in Teaching and Training from the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers.

Poetry devotees will be familiar with much of the work in this fine collection, which focuses on the period from WW II until the present. Sixty-five poets, including such well-known writers as Robert Lowell, Allen Ginsberg, Theodore Roethke, Anne Sexton, James Dickey, Denise Levertov and Gary Snyder, are represented by anywhere from one to a dozen poems each, as well as a brief biography that touches on the writer's aesthetic ideas. McClatchy, himself a poet and critic, has done an exceptional job of selecting works that typify the poets' styles and beliefs. Standouts are Elizabeth Bishop's "In the Waiting Room," about the poet's first perception of herself in relation to others; Randall Jarrell's "The Woman at the Washington Zoo," which deals with the dull, emotionless routine of modern life; Frank O'Hara's "Having a Coke with You," a dizzy declaration of love during a visit to a New York museum; and Mark Strand's "Keeping Things Whole," in which the poet sees his presence in the world as subtracting from the whole of reality. Unfortunately, the poems are not dated, giving the reader no sense of the writers' chronological development.

Alluding to the anthology wars of a generation ago, McClatchy writes in his introduction that his choices are strictly nonpartisan (neither "Paleface or Redskin, or Academic and Avant-Garde"). But from the 65 poets he has selected to represent the course of American poetry over the last half century--beginning with Robert Lowell and ending with Jorie Graham--it is clear his preferences are formalistic and academic. The typical poem a reader will encounter in these pages is urbane, finely honed, and smoothly accomplished. As in all anthologies, the omissions and inclusions are telling. Where are Rexroth, Kees, and Rukeyser? Why Cunningham, Bowers, Feldman, and Garrigue and not Ignatow, Brooks, Blackburn, and Bly? While it is a delight to have many of the poets McClatchy has chosen collected together in a reasonably priced edition, a greater variety of voice and aesthetic would have made this anthology a livelier survey of the state of contemporary American poetry. Still, it is a useful addition to most collections. For the 100 most anthologized poems in English, see review of The Concise Columbia Book of Poetry, p. 74.--Ed.

Wonderful, thorough anthology.

I purchased this book for a poetry class, but I take great pleasure still in opening to a random page and finding something new. This is a dense, thorough anthology, good for revisiting known pieces and discovering poets to look into further. Great introduction to someone interested in learning more about poetry, but is substantial enough that it isn't a kiddy introduction.
