This book examines the representation of blackness on television at the height of the southern civil rights movement and again in the aftermath of the Reagan-Bush years. Sasha Torres examines the complex relations between the television industry and the civil rights movement as a knot of overlapping interests. She argues that television coverage of the civil rights movement during 1955-1965 encouraged viewers to identify with black protestors and against white police, including such infamous villains as Birmingham's Bull Connor and Selma's Jim Clark. Torres then argues that television of the 1990s encouraged viewers to identify with police against putatively criminal blacks, even in its dramatizations of police brutality.

Torres's pioneering analysis makes distinctive contributions to its fields. It challenges television scholars to consider the historical centrality of race to the constitution of the medium's genres, visual conventions, and industrial structures. And it displaces the analytical focus on stereotypes that has hamstrung assessments of television's depiction of African Americans, concentrating instead on the ways in which African Americans and their political collectives have actively shaped that depiction to advance civil rights causes. This book also challenges African American studies to pay closer and better attention to television's ongoing role in the organization and disorganization of U.S. racial politics.

Don Studinski, dba Honeybee Keep, is a permaculture enthusiast and member of the board of directors at Living Systems Institute (LSI) where he applies permaculture philosophy to beekeeping. Apiaries under Don's management are located from Golden to Erie, spanning about 50 miles. Honeybee Keep manages Colorado's first Certified Naturally Grown apiaries. Don's beekeeping articles have been published in Bee Culture magazine and on-line at Honeybee Haven, Peak Prosperity, Bee Informed Partnership and Selene River Press. Beautiful color pictures. Detailed useful advice for the new beekeeper.

This book is VERY useful for anyone starting out in bees. Especially if you live in a northern climate. But it's also a good book about beekeeping in general even for the experienced beekeeper. There is a lot of content here and it's organized in the form of a year of beekeeping. It is communicated clearly and yet simply.

Month-by-Month Expert Beekeeping Guidance! Colored Photos!

Beekeeping Mentor in a Book is SUPER helpful! I truly feel Don is walking me through each step, explaining the details of beekeeping clearly and simply, and his book is organized by each month so I can read the night before what I’m supposed to be doing this month then go and do it the next day! Plus his photos are colored so I can actually see what he’s talking about! The other books I’ve read on beekeeping were complicated and hard to use as a new beekeeper, to know what I was supposed to be doing and when. I’ve been reading Beekeeping Mentor in a Book for only two months now, and I’ve gotten more out of it than all of my other beekeeping books combined! I wish I’d had this book when I first started beekeeping!
